Ideal
RoyalBlue We need a top class specialist right winger now - whatever that takes to achieve.

Well, I'd settle for a mediocre one, as long as he's actually a right winger!
There are a couple in the chamionship I would like, Whaley (PNE) or Kightly (Wolves) for example.

They aren't Scandanavian.

Some context for this thread. In the Roy Keane era at Sunderland, prior to this window they had signed 21 players at a cost of 42 million (plus a few loans). In the same time period:

Birmingham - signed 12 for 21m
Wigan - signed 14 for 25+ m (some fees not declared)
Derby - signed 16 for 14+ m (some fees not declared)
Fulham - signed 16 for $25+ m
Bolton - signed 11 for an unknown amount

What do all these teams have in common (hint - look a the table.)

On the other hand:

Blackburn - signed 8 for $7.5 m (plus whatever Rigters cost - 500k, I think)
Reading - signed 6 for $6.5 m (plus Seol)

Blackburn's signings include first team regulars Santa Cruz, Warnock, Samba and Dunn.

I think the lesson is, don't measure the success of the signing season by quantity or cost of transfers. If players like Cisse, Matjovsky and Rosenior get established, our transfer policy has been a success.

Oh er, Birmingham lost Djourou back to the Arse. He played in 13 league games for them so I guess he counted as a first team player too...

Collins John moves from Fulham to Watford.

Edit: Also added the Johan Djouru end of loan.

Fulham are making another bid for Paul Scharner.

In my view he would be exactly the kind of player we would want to replace Sidwell. He's a great player, big and strong, runs around like mad and is dominant in aerial challenges as well as strong tackling, and also is a potent threat in front of goal.
If £3M-£4M is the going rate, I would have wanted us to have a look in.

he is the one player on the whole list of jan deals that i wouldnt mind us putting a bid in for
though hes not good enough to demand the 40K a week or so that hed want to move down here

I thought he was more of a defender? Don't we already have enough defenders that can play midfield and vice-versa.

He'd be a better option than any of them.

Yes, we've got plenty of jack of all trades but how many masters in either position?!

Precisely my point. Scharner isn't a master in either position. SO he would just be another "jack of all trades" which you have already said we have plenty of.

I don't want us to through silly amounts of money at our problems, but the counter arguement to your post would be how much did Watford or Charlton (net - losing Bent meant they had a lot of cash to splash) spend last year when they went down?

I think Blackburn have done very well in the transfer market to be fair. The signings of Samba (free), Santa Cruz (£3.8), MaCarthy (£2.5m, Warnock (£1.5), Roberts (£3m) and Ooijer (£2m) all represent very good value for money and show Hughes has a good eye for a player.
