Football in perspective.......

by sawyers left arm » 20 Apr 2008 06:57

Just before we all get depressed about our current plight I wanted to give everyone a sense of perspective. After suffering with cancer for the last few years my dad passed away on Friday in Basingstoke Hospice at the age of 73. He was a lifelong Reading fan and season ticket holder in the east stand to this day and will be sorely missed.
Forgive me but yesterdays result bears into insignificance for me at this stage but one thing he did say was keep cheering the boys on and keep them up and more than ever I will.

Indeed, football is something to be enjoyed, shared and passed down.
I'll take my young Son to matches next season, and if he's anything like myself he will have no choice but to become a RFC fan.
Like my Dad did to me, and Iike, I guess your Dad did to you.
That's what it's all about.

Very sorry to hear that SLA and my condolences to you. Let's hope the boys can show as much fight as your Dad did.

Many years ago when I was young I promised my dad that I would take him to see Reading when he got old, now I can no longer afford to go and as things have changed he finds it hard to go alone and has missed over half the games this season.

It is one promise I never thought i would break, but thats how much football has changed, I am sure you will remember your time at all grounds with your father, and it is a special memory, and a great part of family life in my opinion.

I'm so sorry for your loss, SLA, and as you say it pushes football into the position it should be in - a bit of a diversion from the realities of life.

At least he lived to see us play two seasons at the top level, and he has produced a son who can write a difficult post with eloquence.

Having lost my mother some years ago, I can tell you that it does get better. In the end you remember only the good times and there are times when I honestly think that she is with me and I find myself talking to her. It may sound strange, but to me it is the most natural thing in the world.

I'm sorry to hear that SLA, you are of course absolutely correct, relegation or even the prospect of relegation is a bit crap, but nothing to get upset about when you consider all the other things that are far more serious, particularly the loss of a loved one.

I'm sure the memories of watching Reading succeed with your dad will help keep your memories of him fresh and happy.

Sorry for your loss. It certainly put's our current "plight" into perspective.

I'm so lucky i can actually watch The Royals whenever i want.

My Dad has a disability that has prevented him watching Reading for the last 10 years (ironically his last ever game was the first at the Madejski after 40 years of watching at Elm Park) I can't imagine the day when i can't re-live each match with him every Saturday night on the phone.

RIP to your Dad.

I may post things that annoy some people at times, but I am truly sorry for yours and your families loss as I've lost dear family members with cancer.

My thoughts are with you tonight.

Ineed...but sadly my 9 year old now says he supports Liverpool as much as Reading(peer pressure) but my 5 year old bless him is Reading through and through

Being a bit of an idiot I forgot to refer to your father SLA.I too should pass on my best wishes to you SLA. I love my dad and the thought of losing close family members is something I dread. Wish you all the best.

Hopefully they'll be at least a couple of goals before the end of the season and you can give an extra loud cheer for him because I'm sure he'll be watching!

So so sorry for your loss and hope time can help ease your pain.

Sorry to hear that news. Having lost someone close last year I can only begin to imagine how you feel right now. Hopefully we can stay up for your Dad's memory. Can I suggest you invest in one of the bricks as we have found its a great comfort before games to be able to touch the name of a lost loved one.

RIP
