Gylfi Sigurdsson stars for Iceland U19s

by IcelandicStokie » 27 Apr 2008 21:42

Gylfi Sigurdsson scored one goal and was mom when Iceland U19s beat Norway 3-2 today. He is being linked with a summer move to Rosenborg.

Been scoring for the reserves as well. Another young player to play well elsewhere and not to play in the first team methinks

Here's a positive for next season if we do go down. Along with James Henry and Alex Pearce. I expect to see a lot of all three next season when we lose some of the first team and are careful financially in replacing them.

I'm going to go out on a limb now and make some predictions.

Pearce will sign for Norwich in the summer.
Sigurdsson will sin for a League 1 team after a loan spell next season
Henry will fester and then move to Bournemouth who will win League 2 next season.

If we go down I suspect that we will have difficulty in shedding some of the present first teamers given how poorly they have been playing. We may have a dead wood problem reminiscent of the Goater days.

Why dont we just scrap the academy set -up - Fed up with it being a feeder for other clubs ---no one but no one has managed to even get a sniff of 1st team premiership football and if you look back over the years who the hell has ever stepped up from academy - Get shot of it and dont give the lads false hopes when they dont even exist!

Although it's a crying shame we've not yet produced first team players for the team I think it's still an important part of the club.

Having the youth system keeps the club in the local community and gives it some soul amidst the big time charlies coming in and out of the first team squad.

If all clubs turned round and jacked in their youth programs where would we be?

The big problems was it was shite until Hammond took over. We're only getting over the initial problems now.

It's easy to be critical of Coppell for not playing kids and it's pretty stupid when he's played players like Halls out of position instead of giving youth a try, but it's not like we've had kids not making it here and going to play in the Premiership.

Ashdown played for Pompey yesterday. In the Premier League. (But only because James was injured)

Inflation in Iceland is 15.5%
It was already an expensive place but now. Wow!
No wonder we have a few Iclandic's on the books.

Wonder how many premier league games he would have started for us if he stayed?

See Gylfis outstanding goal here, scroll about 29 minutes into the clip, a great strike from outside the box. He's going to be a very good player.

Gylfi was mom again as his goal provided Iceland with a crucial 1-0 win over Israel today. Iceland and Bulgaria are top of the group with 6 points from 2 games, while Norway and Israel lie bottom on zero points. Iceland take on Bulgaria on Thursday in a decider which team goes to the U19 European Championships finals this summer.

You don't think they might be interested in getting him for the future then?

Bearing in mind he's still only something like 18, I can't imagine most sides who might be looking at him will be thinking they'll be throwing him straight into the side. I guess it just depends on the standard the club is at though.

The few times I've seem him play he's looked very good technically, although perhaps a little bit lightweight. I'd hope that he's one the club will keep for a couple of years to give him a chance to progress and push for the first team (as unlikely as that may sound for a Reading youngster!).

Ideal First of all, why would anyone leave RFC to go to Norway, and not be any closer to first team football? Makes no sense.

Because if we're still in the same league for the next couple of seasons and we're happy to let him go then I'd imagine he would be closer to the first team in Norway than at a club that's willing to let him go and playing in the richest league in the world.

At Reading he's probably about 10th or 11th in line for a central midfield spot and thats only IF Coppell ever saw it fit to play a youngster in his first team. Now Rosenborg might have similar depth in midfield but if they were looking to bring him in as an 18/19 year prospect I'd guess he'd probably be a lot closer to a first team game than 10th or 11th choice.

I'd be interested to hear of this midfield packed full of established internationals though. They don't look that way to me from the quick glance I just took at their midfield.

It's also closer to home of course!

Ideal Secondly, Rosenborg do generally not do "talent development", what they do is they buy the best players from the other teams and go that route.

That's why I asked the question. Fair enough, if they don't seem to bring in anyone for the future then it might not look like a great move.

I doubt there is any truth in the rumour either by the way!
