The 17 Bus That I assume would include Derby, who bought loads in Jan this year, tho I do accept that it was a hopeless case already, please remind me what Chelsea won last season for their spending??

Worked well for Leicester too, £2m plus spent that saved their place in the Championship.

As ever it very easy to quote examples of how spending does or does not work.

Leeds, Derby and even Reading with Tommy Burn's magnificant seven on the 'it does not work' side. Pompey three seasons ago, Bolton, Chelseas two championships and argueabley Man Utd on the 'it worked for us' side.

Suppose ir all boils down to buying the correct players

Which overall SC has been quite good at, as can be seen by the numbers that are attracting interest.

Sorry PP you are right, there is no guarantees at all in football, ever.

Hows about Sunderland last season for starters? Maybe you were one of those who mocked Keane's reckless and extravagent spending?

Then, of course, the club that stayed up at our expense worked their way up the league ladder at an impressive rate, courtesy of significant investment.

As for Leicester, maybe they spent too late but are starting to get their rewards this season.

Sunderland spent more last season than they earned in staying up - is that value for money? They appear to be continuing their trend this season.

As a side note, for all of Keane's spending their defence still contains 2 members of the defence that got 15 points in the Prem a few seasons ago (that came from Sunderland fans and I have not checked it's accuracy).

Collins & Nosworthy both played in the 3-0 defeat yesterday and were part of the 15 point defence.

The 17 Bus Despite all the evidence from the past some still believe you can buy your way to promotion, or safety.

Seems to have worked quite well for Chelski

Especialy as the political climate between the UK and Russia remains OK and as long as Abramovich is not a close ally of Putin

however on relegation salaries fell, and rightly so, paying excessive salaries is one way to unbalance the books

Although SC said the best chance of bouncing straight back would have been to keep wages the same and offer big promotion bonuses. Perhaps you need to speculate a bit to reach the £30+ million bonus of the PL?

Worked well for Leicester too, £2m plus spent that saved their place in the Championship.

£2 million is a lot to most of us - but in football terms is pretty meagre. Hence why it is becoming a billionaire's toy. At the other end of the scale Reading Town had a crowd of 38 watch them in a recent away game.....

But we did not have to speculate that much to reach it in the first place, neither did Hull or Stoke.

the best chance to go up is to keep wages high, and give big bonus' for promotion agreed, but.....
mr mad wants out and will not pump millions of his own cash in without being sure hell get it back, and thats fair enough really, where are these billionaires who are queuing up to buy us anyway?

so this whole debate is daft, because mr mad does own us, and will continue to do so for the near future, and until an individual does come in with the clubs best interests at heart, and a bucket load of cash to pour in, we will continue in the way we have for the last few years.

which hasnt really done us too bad now has it.

For the record, though, although on relegation salaries did fall, they fell to a level substantially (I understand about £8-9 million) higher than they were at when we were last in the CCC. That accounts for the bulk of this year's parachute money in one hit.

Agreed, and, as you say, it's only the best chance of going up - there are no guarantees it will work, and if it fails then you're out of business. And it only takes three other people doing it at the same time and you're in a pissing race, except that it's money going down the drain .....

To me it sounds more like football inflation (the new TV deal has pushed all salaries higher) coupled with contracts designed to try and keep PL-standard players at the club.

Shirley, the best chance of going up is to have the best and hungriest team in the division. That works 100% of the time and it doesn't always need to involve large investment.

Absolutely right, but you can't buy hunger, and you can't make players more hungry by throwing money at them. You need players with the right mindset - which tends not to be "established" (e.g. high-value) players.

I think the biggest eyebrow rasier from the comments was Coppell's retort to the questioner when he asked him what he'd do with Watson once Matejovsky was back fit. That just goes to show that Coppell doesn't want that level of competition and the problems that go with it.

Would Palace do business with Coppell? I'd guess that it's a bit of a smokescreen to divert attention away from the fact that Coppell doesn't really want to bring Watson here.

In which case why did Coppell say "we enquired about Watson"? (That's the exact words used, by the way).

If not wanting to buy a player who was unsettled and wanting to leave his club because he's not guaranteed a starting place -and then not being able to guarantee that player a starting place - is "not wanting that level of competition" then that's fine by me.

Can it now be finally agreed that, contrary to what many said, we did have "Second Season Syndrome"?
