Germans & Scandinavians

by Glen Little's Nose » 23 Dec 2008 11:52

Anyone have a view on why we have not signed players from these areas? (except Mikkel).

My feeling is that their mentality would have been ideal for us and I am sure our premiership position would have been attractive.

Even now I would think we would be a good bet.

Coppell is still agrieved about the war and the suspicion that some of the Scandinavians collaborated with the Germans.

Do you count Iceland as Scandinavian?

I thik it's irrelevant, like saying we have no Russians, Canadians or Samoans.

Do you? (Some do and some don't. Personally I think they're a little far away to count."

Agreed with the irrelevance though.

I'd have them as tenuously linked.

Much like everyone in the British Isles can be tenuously linked together.

The fact that I was born in Reading and moved to Norfolk as an adult does not exclude me from gratuitously insulting the Welsh.

Brede Handgeland was a good signing for Fulham.

I know, but Berkshire to Norfolk isn't really a massive stride up the evolutionary ladder is it?

Nope - Scandinavia is only Norway, Sweden and Finland.

I once got told off by a Dane for saying Denmark was part of Scandinavia! The correct term for all 4 - and possibly Iceland too - is "the Nordic countries".

Iceland was a Norwegian/Danish 'colony' so there's strong cultural ties even if they're geographically remote.

Finland is not all that culturally related to Sweden and Norway but, obviously, geographically close.

Didn't they get to No. 4 in the 70s with "Baby I want your love?"

Interestingly enough (hush at the back), I noticed the other day that Bjork describes herself as Scandanavian on Hunter.

I don't think that can be it, otherwise we wouldn't be signing players from the Republic of ireland.

I have been told by various Finns that Finland isn't part of Scandanavia and Denmark is!

(Historically Finland is more closely aligned to Russia than to either Sweden and Norway).

Back to the point of the thread - maybe we don't have a massive European scouting set-up?? That - plus, as Ideal says, the conveyor belt of talent coming out of that part of the World has somewhat slowed down - would seem to me to be the reason.

You could add Spain, Italy, The Netherlands, Belguim and all the former parts of Yugoslavia to hat list as well.
