Coppell to sign contract next

by retro royal » 05 Feb 2009 08:35

With Doyle & Hunt signing extended contracts does that mean that Coppell has hinted to them that he will be staying on longer than the current season.

If we go up then he'll stay, why would he go? If we stay down then he'll go, why would he stay?

If we go up he could easily decide that his job is done.

He's been here a long time (in footballing terms) and has been through the whole cycle of events with us.

He may decide that the task of shaping a new team for a longer stay in the Premiership would be better done by a new person, with new ideas, no preconceptions about players etc etc.

I can see it being quite a tough decision, and I'd be very sad if he decided he'd done as much as he could.

But it's his call and no one with any sense would be calling for his head if we did get promoted.

Spot on. That's how i see it too. If he takes us up he leaves on a high. He knows how difficult it is for a club like Reading in the Premier League - i'm not sure he wants that stress again.

If we don't go up then he'll say that he's failed and walk away.

Agree also - Coppell performed miracles on a restricted budget when we were in premiership -

Chairman knows that and thats why he loves him so much. The only way Coppell would stay is if he was given the investment to make Reading a potential permanent fixture in the premiership - that isnt going to happen and Coppell won't want the stress of another dogfight to keep team in division, and the disappointment again, if we should not stay there

Actually I'm not sure that's the case.

I don't think Coppell would actually be that interested in a job where he had huge funds and was expected to deal with the inflated egos of big stars. It's not what interests him.

He's never been restricted in terms of what he can spend, he simply doesn't operate in the world of big bucks.

If JM truned round to him and said - I want you to spend £100 million and get me a place in Europe I don;t think that would be what would make him stay.

If he looked at the young players coming through and thought ' I can turn these into a competitive team' then that would be a challenge that I think would excite him.

The fact you never hear anything about the situation makes me think he will leave at the end of the season. I'm not sure that it's the dogfight that he is not up for, just all the BS that comes with being in the Premiership.

It's when you start thinking about replacements that it gets worrying.

Coppell knows that in the premiership , you need investment - he was walking away at the end of last season, had it not been for the support the fans/club gave him - Im not saying spend £100m - but equally £5m isnt going to do the trick - none of us know exactly what Coppell has been given to spend and it could be the case, that for the money he has got available, he doesnt think will allow for the purchase of any players, that will make a difference and improve the squad -so why spend it.... and not all players that could take the club forward have "inflated egos of big stars"

FROM TODAYS EVENING POST - THIS SUGGESTS THERE ARE SOME RESTRICTIONS ON WHAT HE CAN SPEND, EVEN AT THE MORE NOTIONAL LEVELS - "VAST" PROBABLY MEANS C£1M

But Coppell admits he was hoping to make one more addition to provide Reading with adequate cover.

He told the Evening Post: ”To be honest I would have liked to have got someone else in to give us more bulk, but it didn’t happen for whatever reason.

“I think we’ll be all right in terms of our vulnerability, but we are not in the position where we have vast amounts of money.

He was thinking of walking away because he felt he'd failed the club and a new perspective may be needed, not through any investment issues.

Your quote says nothing about the amount available to sign players. And your interpretation of vast is totally coloured by your own preconceptions. If we wanted we could find you a dozen quotes saying there is always money available for the right player.

Indeed, because he's never been given anything.

I think it's been fairly well discussed (and confirmed by at least 2 managers) that it doesn;t work like that. The manager and DofF look at what they need and then go and put a case to the board for funding. You would however suspect that they have a fair idea of what they would be given a Yes on so don;t bother going and putting a case for buying Kaka in front of JM !!

Not sure on that.

Coppell's contract is never really a big deal is it ? He's never that bothered and I would suspect him and JM know each other well enough for it to be a non issue. SSC won't be knocking on JM's door demanding an extension and JM won't be worried that Coppell will suddenly pack his bags and go if a new deal isn't on the table .

I'd be surprised if the subject hasn't been talked about in private but don't think there is any reason for it to be on the agenda publically until after the end of the season.

Maybe. But it never even seems to get asked about by the local press. It's a pretty big deal that he could leave us, I get the feeling the press have been asked to do us a favour and not draw attention to it.

Maybe looking far too much into it. Your right that these contracts tend to get signed on the quiet. The main reason I think he will leave, is because of how un comfortable he seemed within certain aspects of the Premiership, esp the media intrusion and some of the people you have to deal with.

I would agree it seemed to be a side of it that he really did not like, and may well be a consideration for him.

The local press are hardly stirrers. It just doesn't benefit the EP or Chronicle to go asking awkward questions and I suspect that if they had been told it was 'off limits' they wouldn't pursue the question. Without the access they get to the club they would have nothing to write and I suspect without their RFC coverage at least one of the locals would go out of business.

Tha managers contract and future will be discussed at the end of the season, and rightfully so.

SC might well have a job for life at RFC, should he so want it, should he decide to step down as team manager I am hoping that a position can be found to use his vast football and business knowledge.

What I cannot see is Coppell leaving for that long wanted break, and then to take a job at a lower league club again, seems to me he has had all the building he needs at clubs, Palace, Brentford, Brighton, Reading, time to look for something new away from team affairs.

Coppell is more important to us than any of our players and I hope he stays.

Having said that, if he does leave then I'll respect his decision.

SC said last year that on reflection he wanted to stay if the fans and chairman wanted him. He's made it clear he really likes the job here as he is left alone to get on with what he wants to do i.e. dealing with football matters and doesn't even have to get involved with the contract side of things.

I can't see that dynamic having changed over the course of this season so the job will be his for next season whatever level the club are at.

Should he want to continue in management I believe that will be the case.

Should the worst happen and he decides to leave for any reason, i hope that perhaps the club can arrange a charity match, so that we are able to wish him well, and thank him for all he has done at RFC.

Maybe we could stage a game against Birmingham in early May ?
