Tranter

by fester_royal » 16 Jun 2009 14:22

i've brought this up before in seperate posts but I figure that a purpose made post may help me gauge opinion slightly better.
I've been looking into the possibilty of putting a statue of Mr Tranter on the roundabout at the top of the hill infront of the megastore. I would just like to gauge opinions of fellow royals and hopefully get a few more influencial people in on the idea whod be able to help? i have written to the club and to the post but have yet to recieve any reply.

if in the (hopefully) unlikely event of you not knowing who Mr Tranter is, i request you read up on the man before voting. In short hes the man who kept the club we now love in excistence and should as such be recognised by the club and fans alike as we owe him.

As great a man as he was I don't think a statue is appropriate.

I think a statue should be of a manager or player reflecting what happened on the pitch.

Yes, I know all about Mr Tranter.

a good point, but i see it as we have few 'great' former players, we have ones who are legends in our eyes but not 'greats'.
Tranter on the other hand arguably saved the club single handed. Without his efforts there would be no RFC on or off the pitch.. surely our club has no better legend?
until we have a Best or Finney of our own surely hes the best option?

As I recall from the thread when he died his family didn't want anything ostentatious.

What is this ridiculous obsession with statues and renaming stands? It doesn't suddenly give the club history and tradition. We have bags of it already. It doesn't make heroes. Their actions did that.

The people who care about the club find out about important people like Roy, like Smee, like Death, Friday and Evans anyway, eventually. The important thing is that they live on in our memories. Not in some shitty lump of bronze made by someone who couldn't give a shit.

STAR has the permission of the club for a plaque and his widow has asked that we leave it for a while as she would like to unveil it on the anniversary of his death. A succinct summation of the man for the words on the plaque is proving difficult so (sensible) suggestions are welcome.

There is also a football tournament in planning in his name (Lions and STAR) and there will be a presentation at the STAR AGM of a Roy Tranter Award for services to Reading fans. Other ideas would be welcome.

Exactly - a few words is extremely difficult but the plaque is only so big.

I see what you mean.

So far I've come up with:

Roy Tranter 19xx-2009 For keeping Reading FC alive
(which is no good because he's dead and this just emphasises the fact)

and

Roy Tranter 19xx-2009 Without whom we would not exist
(which is no good because we are without him now)

Still, not bad for a minute's work.

Can STAR provide some sort of estimate of the no of characters limit for suggestions? Otherwise we're pissing in the wind a little.

I like "Reading fans everywhere", I like Forever/Eternally/Always and Grateful/Remembered.

Ideally I think Saviour, or something similar should be in there somewhere as well.

For reference, the Maurice Evans plaque just has his dates and the epitaph:

Player. Manager. Gentleman.

FYI Trant's dates - 1932-2008

How about

'In grateful rememberance'

Glad there will be a plaque. The hope was always that the wall where Maurice's plaque is situated would evolve into a place where the great and the good were commemorated.

Seriously? I'm sure it can be done cheaper than that. And, in any case, still works out a lot cheaper than a statue!! I'm happy to put some money in if the club won't foot the bill.
