Historic Transfer Fees

by strap » 21 Jun 2009 21:41

Does anybody know of a website dedicated to listing historic transfer fees paid for players? I'm trying to create a history of all the transfer fees of all our players over their whole careers, and am coming up short.

Soccerbase is OK as far back as the late 1990's, but after that I'm reduced to scouring through past issues of Rothmans. This gets me only as far back as 1969/70. Since1888 doesnlt list transfer fees, and the AFS site only has the last 12 months. UK A-Z of YTransfers doesnlt show fees, only clubs and appearances.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

My thoughts would be programmes from past seasons. Then try to follow the player from club to club, might help tho intensive.

Dangerous and subjective territory, transfer fees. Minty Murray went to Brentford in 1977 (?) for three grand and a set of fitted carpets (but how big was his house???).

Other thought - you also need to deflate fees into present day money e.g. did Steve Moran cost more than Darren Caskey in real terms. On a more practical note I might remember some mid 60s fees.

Just to add to this, our transfer fees are getting more and more complicated and conditional these days - more and more they're based on number of appearances, relegations avoided or promotions gained etc, so that hardly any are just a simple single sum of money changing hands.

That's why they're so often "undisclosed" and they'll make effective comparisons almost impossible.

You might find Alan Sedunary's Who's Who of Reading FC 1920-2001 useful as I think that's the one that lists every player who played for Reading along with transfer details and a list of other clubs player for.

hope it helps in someway

Exactly what I'm trying to achieve but just for RFC players. I have a sneaking suspicion that it would have ahev been possible to buy everfy RFC player we have ever bought and still have change out of Ronaldo's single fee move to Real Madrid. Just want to prove it!

That is my last option. I just can't face going through all 197 pages again. Done it once already to get the details of all RFC players, and during that exercise didnlt think to log each players career details. D'oh!

What about David Downs?

Surely he can help can't he?

Not unless inflation rose 300% in 10 ten years.

In price as a % of our income though, I'm sure he must have been more expensive. Our annual turnover back in the mid 80s can't have been more than £1 million at best - probably considerably less. Given that in the old Div 2, we used to take about £20,000 on the gate each game, it means he cost 12.5 home games, the equivalent of about £6 million now.

Exactly - wall to wall carpets just seem to be a little bit passé these days. Perhaps the 00s equivalent might be some nice floor tiles in the hallway, wood veneer in the lounge and dining room and some top notch lino in the kitchen and downstairs WC.

 or more likely an extra carpet tile for every 5 matches played - and if the team who bought the player gets promoted then there's a border strip added....

Now...what about a sell-on clause?
