Sarah Star Do the players of other teams wear no. 13? I can't remember any.

Michael Ballack and Danny Murphy are 2 outfield players currently wearing 13 for there club. 13 is normally a number reserved for the reserve goalkeeper.

W&E Royal I want our reserve goalkeeper to wear the number 13 shirt, i hate having it "for the fans" it's gay. I detest that Hunty got the 10 shirt and i also hated it when Adie Williams wore the 8 shirt.

While we're at it, can we get rid of Tom Hark?
Where do you sit with regards to central midfielders wearing the number 4?

If I was to list shirts for positions for a 4-4-2 layout I would go with the following

     1
2  5  6  3
7  4  8  11
   9  10

That's exactly how i see it, although i think a defender could have 4 and a midfielder could have 6. 7 is for the right wing and 11 for the left. We could potentially get a new 1,2,5,6,8,9,10 this season, maybe 7 if Marek goes.

I thought that the tradition was what was being upheld here. In that case,
Goalkeeper = 1
Right Back = 2
Left Back = 3
R Half = 4
C Half = 5
L Half = 6
R Wing = 7
Inside R = 8
CF = 9
Inside L = 10 and
L Wing = 11

Hence, when you switch from the old style 2, 3, 5 formation (and who ever sees that now) to 442 you pull numbers 4&5 or 5&6 into the back 4, leave 8 & 9 or 9&10 up front and the balance in midfield, in roughly the same positions as before.

To be honest, is it really that important what the laydown is just so long as the players now where they are playing and what is needed rom them? I recall a club (I think it was Palace) who experimented with messing about with the numbers for a while in the 70s in order to confuse the opposition. I seem to remember that it worked for a while, opposition players just lost track of who they were supposed to mark!

terrible idea.

We've had bigger heroes at reading such as steve death, friday, (there is more but im not old enough to know who) and never retired their numbers. It would be very disrespectful to these other heroes we've had if we just decided now to retire the number 2. I think IF anything we should have a hallway of greats or even a wall dedicated on one of the stands consistent of the names of royal heroes.

Exactly how Charlie Hurley fielded his teams, so good enough for me! (Oh, and I used that formationfor my subbuteo team :oops: )

Alan Partridge Retiring it > Rosenior

Liam Rosenior retiring > world peace being achieved > retiring the number 2.

Yes, Give his replacement a new number 2 shirt instead with their own name on.

How could you 'retire' shirts in the days before squad numbers ?

Death and Friday didn't have their own numbers, if they didn;t play then someone else wore that number.

Retiring numbers is a daft Americanism anyway and shoul not be allowed, much like Halls of Fame.

Oresumably the time will come when so many shirts have been 'retired' that teams run out of numbers and have to do like Prince and use squiggles as identifiers.
