Royalee I thought 'chance' would be assumed as a decent run in the side, but I guess I will have to dumb down everything I say on here for some posters as they don't have the common sense required to understand some of the points I make.

LOL-resorting to insults yet again whenim simply trying to maintain standards of debate on here

if you cant admit that your question was wrong then its pointless discussing these thingswith you

a chance for a youth team player in the star studded CFC team would be a first team start or 4, and countless other appearances, IMO
and my opinion is right
therefore the answer is still " carlton cole"

He started more than 4 games, but certainly didn't play a huge number.
But he was part of their firstteam set up for several seasons and was highly regarded by Ranieri.

I think it's fair to point to him as an English player from their ranks who was given (and didn't take) the chance to break through. Realistically a player like him isn;t going to get dozens of games to show his worth . If you've maid millions for a player you'll allow them time to find their feet - a home grown player can be moved on more quickly becasue you aren;t showing a loss on the books.

The general point is accepted though that the lack of home grown talent at Chelsea is disappointing.

4 starts over his entire period at the club - over half a decade. Hardly a brilliant run in the team is it.

Just thought I'd stick my oar in by pointing out that Mancienne has played for the Chelsea first team this season as well.

In defence of Brendy's original point (which was mine I think!) if he does do really well on loan with us then it'll only inflate the price if we do then want to sign him - so still lose/lose

Why use a number that is wrong ?

there is a subtle difference between "a chance" and a "brilliant run in the team"
if you cannot see this, its all hopeless.

With the injuries that he suffered in that time - yes

And the spells out on loans - presumably engineered in order to give him maximum opportunities to start games and show what he could do ?

Sun Tzu Makelele was a bit of a one off though

Not really. He took it to an extreme but the idea of a covering central midfielder was well-engrained into football tactics before he came along and players like Mascherano, although with a different style due to their different upbringing in the game, play much the similar role.

I'd give Jonothan Wilson's book on tactics a bit of a read through. Its actually quite informative.

As for Carlton Cole, I understand that Chelsea considered him good enough but his mentality was pretty awry. He went to Villa in 04/05 iirc and started well before fading badly. Maybe it was maturity - he's still pretty young, tbf.

he also once managed to injure himself by being tackled by a plastic cone in training :|

Is not joining Reading. Looks like he will be going to Cov until the New Year.

Hardly a key position for us so I'm not surprised we aren't interested in him. Rodgers played him as a defensive midfielder at Watford and we have at least 3 players who can play in that position.
