Yes, Ireland are part of the British Isles, but I don't consider them a home nation. But yes, if Ireland was to play the likes of France, Germany and Argentina, I'd be rooting for Ireland to win. Much the same could be said for ALL of the home countries. However, I'd support England over any of them, obviously.

Cameroon won their away leg against Gabon. If they win the home leg on Wednesday then Bikey may well get his wish.

I'm really glad for him, one of the best defenders we've ever had.

Ian Royal Thank you. I said nothing about the United Kingdom of Great Britain. About the only part of my post that can be disputed is the proportion of people who are Irish or of Irish descent over here.

Given the geographical proximity and nature, and the close historic links, IMO it makes sense to consider them a Home nation. Especially given a big chunk of their island is incontestably so.

Generally speaking, the English (and I suspect by extension the British) are quite happy to see Ireland do well agains other nations. At least that's how most people I know feel, even if they don't consider them a "home" nation.

no your whole post was bollocks

1. you said ireland is a home nation = wrong

2. you said half of them are over here = wrong

3. you said they are part of the british isles = wrong, they don't consider themselves to be, that is a term only recognised by you guys and it's a fallacy but if it makes you feel better then continue you to use it

a big chunk of the island is incontestably british, i don't call 1/6 of the island in metres squared a big chunk but then again if your knowledge of arithmetic is correlative to your political insight i am not surpised you have come to that conclusion

1) I consider it to be as do many others. If not a full member of the home nations, certainly an honourary one.

2) An exageration for humourous effect

3) Geographically speaking they are part of the British Isles whether they like it or not.

4) I'd call 1/6 of an island a big chunk, it's an entirely subjective view of course, but therefore one which cannot be completely wrong.

Suck it up motherlicker. :P

What makes you think it has nothing to do with HOME Championships?

Up until 1950 by the looks of things - well an Ireland team that picked players from both North and South of the border. 1951 was the first N.Ireland team.

Because I'm not talking about any championships.

When alls said and done, many consider them at least an honourary home nation and treat them in exactly the same way as the other teams from the British Isles. So the whole argument is pretty pointless, because that in effect, makes them a home nation to all intents and purposes for a significant number of people. No idea what proportion and I don't care enough to worry about calculating it somehow.

To be honest I usually hope Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland get beat but quite like the Republic of Ireland (Stephen aside obviously).
