If Griffin Goes...................

by Clockwatcher » 07 Apr 2010 11:50

As a rumour in the Mail today,
"Sheffield United are lining up a summer move for Sunderland defender Phil Bardsley. The former Manchester United right-back, 24, is out of favour at the Stadium of Light"

There must be other Right Backs with some pedigree who are either out of favour /contract who might fit the bill.
Assuming wages and transfer fees are not going to be a problem ??????

There will be plenty avaliable, there always is.

Problem with Griffin will be persuading him to relocate with a young family.

hasn't Griffin said he doesn't want to stay until after the loan deal?

There may be a few outs in the summer, but right back is a priority position. Hopefully we can get Bertrand on another season long loan deal as he won't get a game behind Cole, Zhirkov and Ferriera

Yes, I do remember reading about him saying he didn't want to stay beyond the loan deal because he wanted to prove a point to the Stoke manager. However, I think he's been enjoying playing regular games, in which his team is winning, that he might change his mind. You never know.

With Griffin I believe it's more to do with relocating down South with a young family, however as Spacey rightly points out with regular 1st team football and some affection shown by the fans there is every possibility he may change his mind.

Griffin, who has also played for Newcastle United and Portsmouth, admitted that he has more than likely played his last game for Stoke and could be looking for a new club in the summer.

And if Royals manage to come to an agreement for the experienced defender then they will have certainly pulled off a major coup.

But Griffin remainsg coy about next season, but hasn’t ruled out signing for Reading.

Also with him being over 30 we'll only offer him a one year contract and there for I doubt he'd want to relocate his family for one year. He could still commute like he currently is. But with his current form you'd guess that a few more midlands based clubs would be looking at signing him.

I suspect Griff will get a two year deal without a problem, given his form this season and the level we'll be playing at. If we do get promoted next season he'd still make a good back up Prem right back the season after at worst

Ian, why would we offer him a two year contract when it's club policy to offer anyone over 30 a one year deal? We've offered ivar a one year deal and he's turned it down, why would the griff be any different? Ady williams left because he was only offered a one year deal and Coventry offered him longer. I think the same will happen with ivar

I don't think it's a club policy across the board for 30 year olds. I think it's more a case of offering players a sensible length of contract depending on their value to the team, fitness, cost etc etc.

It's club policy to offer those at the club a one year deal - if we want a player else where who is over 30 we would offer more than that if we felt it the best course of action.

Exactly

Offer players at the club 1 year deal = we couldn't really care if you reject it and leave

Highly unlikely that we'll get Bertrand back for another year although we're bound to try. He's now had two consecutive year long loans at Championship clubs and whilst I agree that he won't ba a starter at Chelsea, they will see the next step in his development as getting hm a loan deal at a mid table Premiership club.

So if Stretch doesn't make it back for the start of the season, we might as well try and re-sign Shorey (only said half tounge in cheek)...

Wouldn't surpirse me , Wastalking to someoen about Griffin on Thursday, and apparently he live in North Staffordahire and his wife and kids are really well-settled there and so he won't move.

Because Hammond isn't stupid enough to apply a blanket rule for everyone of a certain age to the detriment of the club. We've offered Ivar 1 years because he's been on the decline for a couple of years already and it's not in our interests with the likes of Mills and Pearce at the club to offer him longer.
