Nicky Hammond.....

by Wycombe Royal » 13 Apr 2010 10:27

There are strong rumours down in Bristol that the appointment of Coppell as their next manager is imminent as is the appointment of Nicky Hammond as their Director of Football.

Can't see Hammond leaving but you never know.........

It's a Coppell type club, but I wish he'd go somewhere else. Not really sure losing Hammond would be all that bigger deal, but time will tell. I'm a bit old fashioned and prefer a manager to be more hands on than having a DoF involved, but it has worked well here.

I know that topic is there, but this topic was about a current member of RFC staff and is therefore in UR&G......

If anyone wants to read the rumours from Bristol it is all on this link.....

It's easy to say that, and as I say, I'm a tradionalist and believe the manager should be more hands on, but there's no doubting Hammond has been a success here.

However, BM was the chief scout, and key to much of Hammond's good work if you like, and I trust his judgement of players a lot more than I would most managers. So perhaps no DoF wouldn't be a bad idea either, and a wage saved.

Hammond 'pledged' his future to us, but didn't say anything about whether a new contract had been signed (with his contract expiring this summer). It's quite plausible, but I would have thought Coppell, if he was going, would've signed by now.

Why? City are safe, there's no rush to make the appointment. I was half expecting Coppell to return to Palace now that Jordan was gone.

I was under the impression that an announcement was due last week, I stand corrected. I hope Coppell doesn't end up at Bristol, but I wouldn't mind seeing Hammond leave. Nothing against him (not even quite sure what his roles entails) but it did infuriate me having a Director of Football & a Football Consultant on the payroll at the beginning of the season, at a club which was supposedly cutting the cloth.

So if Hammond left who would do his job?

Make McD do it all when he should be concentrating on the team?

Or let Nigel 'Don was my Uncle' Howe do it?

I think it's pretty clear why Hammond is here.

Hammond will leave at some point.

If he does i'd hope we replaced him as he seems to have done a good job and i think it makes complete sense to let the manager concentrate on running the first team and have someone else deal with all the (basically) non football related nonsense. There is absolutely no reason why you should have someone who is appointed because they can run a sports team well also negotiating contracts etc.

I wonder whether they would move Dolan into that sort of role. It's the path Hammond took (Academy to DofF) although I have no real idea what Dolan's career plans are. He and McD clearly get on so there would be logic to it.
