papereyes Zigic goes close.

Serbia much improved on their first game but that sending off ... well ... that sending off changed the game completely, imo.

Was that controversial?

Maguire
That's got to be BS - they lost Euro 76 on pens to Czechoslovakia (?) and got knocked out of '82 World Cup on pens (I think, not sure who by)

First non-penalty shoot-out penalty miss.

Obscure and convoluted stats ftw

A bit over-official by the ref, tbh. If it had been, say, Rooney, I think most on here would have complained.

Still, score that penalty and I think Germany would have won through.

Surely they won the WC '82 semifinal on pens vs France (Schumacher ON Battiston) then lost heavily(?) in the final, with Tardelli scoring a late winner and celebrating accordingly.

Well I don't think the Germans deserve that, but I don't think it will affect the next round as I reckon that they will beat Ghana comfortably.

Hopefully (from a potential English progression point of view) Serbia will qualify second.

I've yet to look at any of this thread --and so before I do, two reactions:

1) The complete dope with the whistle looped round his neck should have been hauled off the pitch and stomped to sheer oblivion before the first ten minutes were up; and

2) We've all had days like it, but still --if you were to hand Poldi the numbered key to every room in a Jo'burg whorehouse and turn him loose for another hour and a half, he still wouldn't score

Agony for the Germans, and then better'n 24 hours' wait to assess the damage in full --yee-owch

'Greed Klose had to go --I mean, under the circumstances as you say (but then his first booking --bit harsh that, no?)

But I'll stand by any general assertion to the effect that the man taking names was, on balance, a card-happy twit, and he would proceed to let some stuff fly later on that would have been more than enough to warrant a booking under his set-a-tone-from-the-off standard in force early doors (can't cite specifics, but there were squawks aplenty on TeeVee and scrolling match commentaries, and I was fuming where I sat)
