Netherlands v Japan

by Jerry St Clair » 19 Jun 2010 13:21

ITV refer to the Dutch as Holland in their screen graphics and in their commentary. Seriously, do they purposely recruit all their staff from a School of Spaccers?

Anyway, the game is dogshit. That is all.

On 35', a regular Dutch staff comment7or @ ESPN's live-scroll I've never been this bored watching my own country play.

Ah, so it ain't just me then...

Elsewhere, yours truLOLy 45+1': Compounding the misery, the TV cameras fail to catch the fourth official's electro-board signalling how much time has been added on to the end of the half. The incomparable syrup-voiced Derek Rae on ESPN says one minute.

HT: ...and it's done. Can I get a "Hallelujah!"?

I had it to be a draw first half and the dutch to win the second half. Could be in.

Good strike, shite 'keeping, bad clearance kept it alive, and only 24 minutes more of this misery to go, plus time added on

Well done to Blue samurai.
Surprised to see our manager did not field weaker squad to give a rest to regulars.
We were huge underdog, but Okada and players did not think so, and did best they can do.
As we are competing in the four team league, one goal down against Holland is better result than Denmark did.
We still have a big chance to go to last sixteen.
Bring on Vikings! I will be there (Rustenberg) with Royals flag!! ..... It will take 4 and a half hours from Osaka to HongKong, then another 12hours flight to Johannesburg.

Fly it high, hiro

Boy, where were those final ten minutes during the first eighty, mm?

Japan not quite at the races today but fought hard; the Dutch unconvincing

Most of the Dutch seem quite happy to refer to their country as Holland

..unless perhaps there an autonomous region of the Netherlands that has its own team.

^ Interesting

My own national origin notwithstanding --and of course no one ever has any compunctions when it comes to mentioning what a bunch of uncouth, beer-bellied and culturally insensitive clods we are-- I did a lookup on it years ago and apprised myself of the distinction

Just to stay on the safe side, I've been calling it "The Netherlands" ever since --which is always fun when you go Caribbean and append "Antilles" to it-- but I actually did get into a lengthy and pretty stupid bar argument over it once after work with some jackass who reckoned he'd "won" because he got me to admit that BeNeLux are, collectively "the low countries" (= "nether lands")

I didn't bite when he tried to get me to say "Dutch Antilles," though, and I did at least manage to cadge a ride home from the ignorant bastard
