Wycombe Royal We only got him to sign a new deal so that we didn't lose him for nothing. We wouldn't have got any compensation if we hadn't taken up the option on his contract.

You sure about that, he's under the age of 24. So I thought it would be a tribunal fee? Or does it only count if he turns down the contract then moves. Genuine question.

You would only get a fee/compensation if you offer the player who is under 24 a new contract that is on the same or better terms and he turns it down.
With Antonio his contract was up and our only options were to not take up the option of a further year on his contract and release him (thus getting fee/compensation) or take up the option which Antonio could not turn down (it is our option not his).

Ian Royal I assumed it was a typo missing out "no"
I wasn't aware we had an option to automatically extend his contract without his agreement though. Sounds like the sort of thing that would be relatively easy to get out of by kicking up a stink. Although we'd obviously get the compo from any other club then.

Barry the bird boggler Personally I hope Antonio goes nowhere except into our 1st team

Surely if we didn't take up the option then we get no compensation as we'd not offered him a new deal (as per your first paragraph !!)
Not sure if you typo'd there.....

Do you think that he is ready for the jump? I have not seen him, so of course would not comment, but there seems to be mixed feelings about him.

Wycombe Royal Indeed it was a typo - if only I could type as fast as as the sentance forms in my head......

For a youngster coming out of non league football the clause would seem pretty straight forward. We took a risk on him, he got a big opportunity. For us to say we wanted to be able to either cut things short or keep him on depending on his rate of progress would not be at all unreasonable. Think of it as a break clause rather than an extension.
And it's obviously not in the slightest without his agreement, as the squiggle at the bottom of the contract shows....

So are you just idly speculating about what his contract was or do you have inside knowledge.
When I said without his agreement, I of course meant without his further agreement at the time of extension, clearly anything in the terms of his contract would count as agreed in the strictest sense. It doesn't mean that person would have to be happy with it at the result a the later date
