Rumour - Nick Feely

by LoyalRoyalFan » 03 Aug 2010 13:55

We're linked with a young goalkeeper from Australia.

Celtic are set to beat Fulham and Reading to the signing of Australian goalkeeper Nick Feely.
The 18-year-old has had trials with all three clubs but Cetic are set to win the race, having had the Perth Glory stopper training there since July 1.
Feely spent two weeks with Fulham in February, working alongside fellow Australian Mark Schwarzer, but he looks set to join the Neil Lennon revolution at Celtic Park.
Celtic are short on goalkeepers having sold Artur Boruc to Fiorentina, and although Feely will not immediately be expected to challenge for a first-team spot he is seen an exciting talent.

We really, really don't need any keepers.

18 years old. One to be developing. He's not likely to be in consideration for a first team squad place until 21 realistically. Which is three years away. Who knows where Andersen, Federici, McCarthy and Hamer might be then?

They'll be somewhere else if we keep buying competition.

I have a feeling that Andersen will be pushing Fed really hard for a starting berth this season and I expect him to be the #1 next.

I know, lets sit on our laurels and not make sure we have a constant supply of decent players available so we can get relegated and go back to the good old days of being shit!

That's an extremely warped view on the situation in hand, even by your long distance viewing standards

Ian, we also have several very promising youngsters in the academy at the moment. So therefore with the four regular GKs we have, some of whom are 18 or there abouts, and the academy GKs, why on earth would we need yet another keeper?

we have th esupply though, what you talkin 'bout ian

we have a 1st choice who will probably be with us a year more at least, then we have 3 yoof keepers fighting it out to be No1 when he goes.
at that point where its clear who is best, we may sell one of them

We have the England U21 keeper (or one of them anyway), Danish one too, the Australian no 2/3 keeper and Ben Hamer is no slouch from what I have seen. That looks like a strong piece of succession planning to me?

Follows the cycle of how we've acted previously with Andersen for example. Bring in young talent and develop it.

I haven't said we should do it, it obviously depends, but there's no harm in having a look and just because we've got a good crop of yount keeper's at the moment doesn't mean we shouldn't be planning a few years ahead.

Personally I really can't see us still having all three of McCarthy, Andersen and Hamer that far in the future. They all seem to be too good to be content to bench warm waiting for their chance. And even loans are going to astop being attractive after a while as they'll want to be settled in their own team playing regularly I'd have thought.

I don't know much about the 'keepers coming through below them in the academy. I just think it's stupid to write off someone now on the basis that we currently have a good crop of 'keepers when he isn't likely to be ready to step up for 2-3 years.

Around the same time as at least 2 of Andersen, Hamer and McCarthy you mean? Not forgetting Locke

Personally I think one of those three may well have broken through in that time and at least one of the others will have moved elsewhere for first team football. Time will tell, but I'd be amazed if all three are still at the club in 3 years time.

Any more injuries and this could happen.

It would be "interesting"

Nope, I meant if we lose strikers, pull Feds out of goal and play him up front, with one of the other keepers between the sticks.
