I wonder if this has anything to do with Pearce's current contract. Does anyone know whether he's currently discussing a new deal with us?

A swap deal with Pearce and Ashley Williams would be good business

Not worth selling at on 500k

Pearce has played well the last few games, but I'm not overimpressed. However, there's no value to us in selling him for as little as £500,000. He's valuable as a backup centre back because the others have a tendency to get injured or sent off, which he doesn't. If we could get a million for him, though, I think we could replace him with someone better for that money. But it would be a novelty these days if the manager was given all the proceeds to spend.

I think Pearce is worth more to us than anyone else personally. I can't see him ever being more than an average quality Championship Centreback. The clubs that would be a good buy for probably aren't able to spend the £500k+ it ought to take to get him off us. Anyone who could afford it, ought to be looking at better players IMO.

Sadly, whilst I think he's a good player with a good defender's brain, he is just too ungainly and physically cumbersome to be a top centreback. Good enough to be pushing our current centrebacks, but not good enough to take us to the next level.

Which is good for us because we are and will remain an average Championship football club for some years.

I certainly hope we can maintain at least that. It would be a good result IMO.

If true, this is madness.

Love or hate Pearce, he is a centre-half capable of holding down
a place in a Championship side AND HE IS ONLY 21 YEARS OLD.

Centre-backs need EXPERIENCE and they get better and better, however slow.

Harte has shown that. John terry is not exactly quick.

Now IF QPR think they can get him for £500,000, we'd then need another CB, right. Cost? Mills was 2 MILLION.

Firstly Mills was not £2m, potentially it could reach that but our currently outlay on his transfer fee is nowhere near that.

And you can get decent central defenders for a lot less money than we paid for Mills.

Anyway when does Pearce's contract expire? Is it next summer? If so could this be his agent trying to amke out there is interest in him thus trying to speed up the process of a new contract?

On the basis that these aren't just examples of agent/paper talk, and there is a real interest there, then it might not be such a bad move.

Of course it depends on how much we're already paying Pearce and how much he wants from his next contract, but potentially we could shift him for 500k and bring in someone like De Merit on a free. That gives us 500k to potentially add into the transfer kitty for that extra midfielder or forward, or alternatively just pocket the fee and not really weaken the squad. There's also the chance to bring in a loan centre half if there isn't the right player on a freebie.

It's worth remembering that, whilst Pearce has done pretty well, he, Mills and Ingimarsson are all a little too similar and personally I don't think they blend that well into the best partnerships.

The real downside would be that he's our youngest and most reliable (in terms of being available) defender. We'll be needing to replace Ingimarrson in the near future (Pearce is that replacement in my head) and we don't really want to have to be replacing too many players all in one go, like we did last season.

500k for Pearce would be a good fee, but it depends where that money goes and who we can replace him with.

Wide of the mark there - Pearce is contracted until June 2013!

I cannot see the benefit of letting our young and promising young players go so quickly. I hope the reports are wrong.

Half a million is such a small amount in current day football that surely you would only sell anyone for £500k or under if they either had no future at the Club or if you were desperate to get the players wages off the payroll.

Since surely neither of those are true in the case of Alex Pearce it would be very surprising if he were to be sold and especially to a fellow Championship Club. Throw in the fact that Ivar is nearer the end of his career than the beginning of it and the fact that Zurab is currently only on loan and this seems to me to be a non starter.

What if that 'small' fee of 500k meant we could afford to sign Kishanishvili on a perm deal in Januray and also snap up another promising Premiership youngster either on loan with a view to a move or on a freebie in the summer?

Throw in someone like De Merit next summer to replace Ingimarsson and we'd be laughing wouldn't we?

Why would we do that when we have him for the season, anyway?

so fairly speculative punt, and unlikely to be cheap as Pearce, when we already know Pearce is solid?

WHY?

YES, centre-backs get better into their thirties.

He is already learning to counter-act his lack of speed (Harte can teach him loads)

At the moment he's close to being one of the first-choice two. He's certainly very safe "cover" AND LIKELY TO GET EVER BETTER for many years
