Snowball,
For one who pupports to know a bit about football I am surprised that you take so much notice of
Actim
Man of the match
Player of the season etc
and then you quote one new book, yes just one new book without crediting the writer, where the writer expresses the opinion that a player reaches his peak at 27 and that is good enough for you to start quoting it as if it is the Holy Bible.
Also Shane reaches no.98 and Harte 61 in an index-big f****** deal.
Shane scores 6 in open play against Leeds tomorrow would be headline news to us on here but 98th in an index strikes me as about as important as receiving a certificate for swimming a width.

And yet the Long-Haters thought it meaningful, when Long WASN'T in the Index, to rub it in.

It has been known and discussed for decades that footballers peak around 26-27. It's nice to see empirical evidence for it.

No doubt you'd rather just make utterly unsubstantiated assertions, but the simple fact is you are WRONG if you're trying to argue that it is not generally true that footballers peak around 27.

You could take, say, the two automatically promoted sides from last year's CCC and check their average age. Think it'l be 22?

Victor, just because YOU don't give a oxf*rd, doesn't mean that the Index has no meaning.

Someone WITHOUT an agenda might actually TEST the thing and see how it spotlights the best or most useful players.

We could, for example, consider who we, subjectively, think are the best players in the league, consider which players are being linked with Premiership clubs. Having done that, we could then see if those players feature prominently in the list.

They do.

Or we could just neck lagers and waffle.

unsubstantiated opinion - which by the way is still based on the evidence of knowing the club, knowing results and watching games - >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> opinion poorly substantiated by giving far too much weight to fairly limited "facts" and statistics and expressing it as if it is somehow therefore incontestable.

For all his talent that he has when presented with a freekick in a shooting position, he once again showed that in a defensive position he is a real liability. I really don't know why Grayson didn't keep Gradel on the right as he would have torn Harte apart, whereas when he was playing on the left Griffin had him in his pocket.

Harte made one slip in the whole game, one poor pass

Other than that he didn't put a foot wrong, got in some headers, some good tackles, some VG passes and one excellent free-kick

Not his usual assured self on the ball in second half. Plenty of passses going astray. The usual liability when players run at him.

More unreliable stats from Snowball. What a shame the government are cutting back on jobs - you'd have been ideal for them!

What about in the first half when he dived in on Grabel and conceded a really silly foul for a trip right on the edge of the area? What about in the second half when he was easily outmuscled on the byeline, allowing their guy to cut in on goal and having to be rescued by Feds? Then he completely missed a challenge wide on the touchline but fortunately the ball ran out of play, as Harte was fully committed and their man would have been free on goal.

So that's twice in 90 minutes a man with the ball got away?

Snowball,
I know how much you love player ratings in" Back from the game" threads-take a look, almost everybody gave him a 6 when the defence kept a clean sheet and your "didn't put a foot wrong" shows that you and our manager see the player through RTGs whereas we can all see that he isn't very good and giving him a near two year contract was as crazy as we did for two other oldies Bryn and Ivar.

No that is just two he mentioned. I doubt it was an inclusive list.

THe fact is he looked shaky at times today. He was turned vey easily on a number of occasions (I guess that is age catching up with him) and he put plenty of passes astray. He also he provides very limited attacking threat down the left meaning the left winger (Church or McAnuff today) has to do all the work themselves and does not benefit from any overlapping runs.

Defence kept a clean sheet. Nearest we got to a goal was Harte's free-kick

The back from the game threads I treat with slightly more respect than they deserve.

Surely the closest we got to scoring was Antonio hitting the woodwork?

We have the sixth best defence in this league, letting in an average of 1.16 goals per game

That INCLUDES the Gylfi period when we were letting in 1.25 goals per game

Hitting the woodwork is an OFF TARGET shot.

How did it sound on the radio, midge?

They didn't even show our best chances. Kebe and Griffins cutbacks from the byline or Long's cross to the far post that Kebe almost got on the end off.

It once again comes down to who makes the TEAM better, Harte or Armstrong. In my own opinion he's the inferior defender and for all of his good points such as set pieces and having a good header on him, I don't personally believe that his overall contribution is superior to Chris Armstrong's.

Right now Brian believes otherwise which is fair enough and while we're keeping clean sheets it's hard to change the team but if Armstrong is at that level of fitness he was in 2008/2009 I believe he'll help the team more going forward.
