I'd more say, like Stephen Hunt, he's just not that bright.

Sunderland are about to bid £7m for Reading and Republic of Ireland striker Shane Long according to a report in the Irish Independent.
The Tipperary man has been linked with a host of clubs this summer including Wolves, Everton, Celtic and Newcastle.
However, the paper claims that the Black Cats willingness to offer Long wages of £40,000 could be crucial in making a deal happen.
Reading look certain to sell Long as he will be out of contract at the end of next season.
Royals boss Brian McDermott admitted to BBC Berkshire earlier this month: "If a Premier League club comes in and we decide the deal is right and Shane wants to go there's nothing we can do.
"It's important I do the right thing by him as well. For me he'll go down as a very special Reading player."
Long scored 25 goals for Reading last season.
Long's strike partner at Reading and fellow Irishman Noel Hunt could also be on the way out with the Independent linking him with a £1.75m to West Ham.
The same paper has further speculation about Irish internationals with Arsenal linked with a £9.5m move for Wolves striker Kevin Doyle; Ipswich rumoured to be set to offer a improved deal to Preston for Sean St Ledger; and Shay Given reportedly a target of Aston Villa, West Brom and Celtic.

I like Noel Hunt, as I do his brother, but if we get £1.75m for him I'd gladly eat a hat of Spacey's choice.

His scoring record is excellent. So it's conceivable that someone would look at that, in the context of his injuries and think he's worth picking up for a million or two. Don't agree he's worth it, but it wouldn't be the craziest deal I'd heard of recently.

Well, maybe I under-rate him but a 27 year old with a recurring knee problem (he had it in Scotland as well) who hasn't looked fully fit (to me) for circa 18 months, and has never played in the top flight is surely not going to command any more than £1m, if that.

Anyway, I hope he doesn't go as he's a good guy and contributes well enough for us.

Sod "commanding" the value, we're the type of club that would hold out for more since we're not desperate to get rid of him.

If any other clubs are genuinely interested, whatever RFC or the admirable Mr Hammond might hold out for (or what you or brendy might choose to think) I personally doubt that 27 year old 2nd Tier strikers with dodgy knees are likely to sell for £1m+.

Agreed-if we got £1million for him I would be surprised.

He ARRIVED with the knee problem and was "managed" by playing 60 minutes

Eventually RFC bit the bullet and had the op done, losing a season of him.

IMO he is still "coming back" and IF, big IF, the knee is genuinely fixed
he could be awesome next season.

Every club will know his history, and a medical would decide on the knee(s)

I would want 3M to even consider it. Who could you get in who has a 1 in 2 record, and for how much?

He had knee surgery in 2003 as well.

So he's coming back from TWO operations.

How good does that make him?

Try again. That 2003 op was a minor cartilage snip
and the article says so. Hundreds of players get those
these days, a bit of arthroscopy in the morning and
you go home in the afternoon.

Hunt's op in 2009-10 was a far more major op to try and fix
his knee once and for all.

It's still a knee op that can leave you out for 6 weeks (although some come back very quickly these days).

The original clean up that he had, and then the following more major work, might just be a product of an overall weakness in that leg or knee.

Ultimately he's had problems with his knee and they may never be fully resolved.

Ok, you're right and I'm wrong.

It was a minor op in 2003 and the fact that he didn't play for 7 months after it is misleading.

He looked strong and fit all through last season.

His knees are fine and he's worth £3m.

End of discussion.
