£10m is a bloody joke.........he aint worth that much and Reading need to be realistic about their valuation ...top scorer in Div, Danny Graham was sold for £3.5m and Long isnt worth 3 times Grahams valuation

Oh well, perhaps we should just let him go for the 1st offer that comes along.

Come to think of it, he HAS to go for £4m doesn't he as that is the clause in his contract.

Big Foot
Friday's Legacy
Big Foot Heard SSN have it on breaking news we've received 4 bids from PL clubs for Long and none meet our £10m valuation

it's media hype. bids may have come in; we know we've had two from celtic that were knocked back, but no-one knows what our valuation is, and there is a release clause in shane's contract that again the media don't know the value of. you shouldn't be so trusting of sky sports news. it's just a 24 hour red top that needs to fill its air time in the close season.

Where in my post am I expressing a trust in SSN? Merely repeating their 'news' for the benefit of this audience

Arsene Wenger is lining up a £12million bid for Wolves striker Kevin Doyle as Arsenal finally prepare to splash the cash.

Well, if Doyle is worth £12m what would that make Long worth?

Long isn't half the player Doyle is.

Impossible to say that when Shane has only put in one quality 2/3's of a season compared to Doyle who has performed consistantly well, when fit, at the highest level.

Long's best form has shown that he's now capable of more than he was just 12 months ago though (I'll still argue that he played poorly at times whilst his confidence was low and he wasn't scoring). He may always have had potential but the last 5/6 months are the first time he's actually really lived up to it (and he's had limited chances to in the past).

Doyle is still a more rounded and capable player though. The gap has closed because Long's improved, but Doyle's superior technique and alround game still makes him the better player for me, irrespective of which league they're showing their form in.

of course hes the better player- i just think that gap has seriously narrowed since doyle left, and that doyle = long x 2 may no longer be correct.

doyler has a habit of going through long periods without scoring too you know.

Because Doyle isn't in the team to score goals - Wolves have played one up front and he's there to hold up the ball whilst other join the attack - and he's done that superbly.

There is more to players than simply the number of goals they score.

i never said anything like that though.
long isnt in the team to just score goals either,is often on his own up front and his workrate/running the channels is comparable to doyles imo

In the 2nd half of last season Long was the equal of anything Doyle produced for us in the Championship and the quality he had alongside him was probably not as good as Doyle had during his time here.

Premier League experience and achievements obviously put Doyle well ahead of Long but the gap is not massive and Long is 3 1/2 years the younger so presumably has the greater capacity to improve.

:?:

Doyle to Arsenal for £12m.

Long to Wolves for £7m.

:?:

Long's goalscoring rate and the way he had to carry us almost single handedly at times was a greater achievment than Doyles with us but I still don't think his level of play or his ability matches up to Doyles in either the Championship or Premier League.

Just opinion of course....there isn't any way of proving it either way.

As an earlier poster said,if Danny Graham has a worth of £3 million or thereabouts so Long must surely be worth about the same or a bit less.
BTW what do posters think Simon Cox is now worth having been chosen ahead of Long in the very important recent World Cup qualifying game ?
Does that now make Long 4th choice for Ireland behind Keane,Doyle and Cox?
If so that puts him on a par with Simon Church who is about 3rd choice for Wales,a national side even worse than Ireland.
If we get more than £3million it might still be a good deal for Reading.

Indeed. Simon Church ran Shane Long very close for POTS last season.

Of course an alternative question to ask would be if central defender Matt Mills has a worth of £4m or thereabouts, what would that make centre forward Long worth?

Very true RR. Forwards do tend to cost more than defenders.
