brendywendy he was dropped due to the playoff game.

May be, but who knows. You can't trust anything the management teams say because most of it's just soundbites to make sure they don't say anything that'll get jumped on by the press.

Marco Tardelli, the manager's trusted lieutenant, said on Thursday: "It is fair to say that Simon Cox is ahead of Shane Long at this moment in time. He has impressed not just me but you as well, no? He has played well but I think he's a good player.

"For us, he's very important because he receives the ball and waits for the team. He helps the other striker. He's good. He works very, very hard for the team. He plays well. He holds up the ball well and can wait for his team-mates to link up. He is a good player. He has a good level of technical ability also."

This lot don't sound the most objective of sources but they/Tardelli don't seem to put it down to Long being effected by the Play Offs.

but before the playoffs it was in the press that long and anyone else involved in playoff games wouldnt play in the intl games
and that stuff about cox is probably for coxes benefit. clearly long is in front of, and a better player, and better at working hard, than simon cox.shirley?
but i take your point, we just dont really know,

Cox is a better technical player, but they are also similar ages iirc so they could be a future partnership

I for one can see them working well together.

But he was involved brendy, that's my point, he came off the bench to replace Cox.

I think you might be getting confused with the games Eire played in the build up to the Play Offs when Long didn't join up with them to concentrate on the play offs.

you are correct in thinking ive confused two sets of eire games.
but i still stand by the opinion that he was rested for the next set due to his extended season.

If he was rested do you think he'd have come on for 30 mins in the first game and then started in the second (the reserves run out agains Italy)?

West Brom have switched their attention back to Fulham striker Andrew Johnson after Reading revealed they want £10million for Shane Long.

The Royals are still licking their wounds following their Championship play-off final defeat to Swansea last season - but are keen to hang on to star men Long and defender Matt Mills, or get top value for them if they do move on.

Albion are believed to have made an enquiry regarding the availability of Long, who netted 26 goals for Brian McDermott's men last season.

But the Royals' valuation of the 24-year-old, who joined Reading from Cork City alongside Kevin Doyle for a nominal fee back in 2005, has ruled the Baggies out of the running.

Everton, Wolves and Newcastle have also been monitoring Long's situation - but it is German giants Bayern Munich who appear to be most likely to capture his signature, and they are reportedly ready to test Reading's resolve with a £7.5million opening bid.

That is still way out of Albion's reach, with the record signing at The Hawthorns still Borja Valero, who was recruited by Tony Mowbray for £4.7million in 2008 but proved to be a massive flop in England.

So manager Roy Hodgson has reignited his interest in Fulham frontman Johnson, with an opening offer of £3million likely to land on Martin Jol's desk.

It could be a case of friends reunited at The Hawthorns in the next week as Zoltan Gera is expected to put pen to paper on a two-year contract with the Baggies, who are also hoping that David Vaughan chooses them over Sunderland, with a decision from the Blackpool star expected on Wednesday.

honestly, he had a good half or so of a season and suddenly people think he's worth £7.5m with one season left on his contract. in the real world where money was tight and unemployment was high this player would be valued at around £3m at the very most. the game is bonkers. take it and run, run as fast as you can. but where are the goals coming from next season? we see cms going to brighton - good signing that. nugent apparently off to leicester - good signing that. by the time we sell long who is going to be left? we'll be scratching around the bargain basement, and that really does worry me.

if we get £7.5 and can get it upfront that is a great deal, even £5m with 2,5m addons aint too shabby

Nugent has gone to leicester may well increase chances of martin waghorn leaving

Popular belief here in Leicester is that CMS chose Brighton as Poyet and the club went out of their way to make him feel wanted.
Sven was unable to meet CMS in person due to a pre arranged appointment.

Hmmm... interesting, very interesting. Can imagine us actually accepting this.

Best would be a very good signing for us IMHO, if he gets fit. Has had some bad injuries over the last 3 seasons but his record isn't to be sniffed at, 6 goals in 12 games last year? 3 of those coming from a hat-trick, albeit against a struggling West Ham.

I wouldn't begin to suggest he is as good as Long, I think Shane is a far better player in all departments, however I think Best could become a bit of a favourite if he moved here, could see him banging the goals in.

Just as I posted this, I saw the Leon Best thread in Rumours, but ah well.

Baggies back in for Long £8m

ROY HODGSON wants to smash West Brom’s transfer record with an £8m swoop for Reading striker Shane Long.
Hodgson wants Long to form a strike partnership with last season’s leading scorer Peter Odemwingie and said: “We are probably two, maximum three, players away from having a squad I’m happy with.”
