what worries me is that if Robinson is the second of the known 2 players we were targeting .....we are totally f88ked....we need a striker in - as much as the back line is a worry the front line is also imho

Think we've all resigned ourselves to fact that, after McD has ruled out Watt and Le Fondre, there will no forwards coming in this year. We're one down in the striking department - McDermott sees Robson-Kanu as the plug for that gap, which would in theory leave us one down on the wings - again McDermott already has that gap filled with Jordan Obita stepping up. Simples.

Shuffling the pack isnt going to sort the teams problems ..we need a 20 goal striker to replace whats gone and the ones we have will barely muster 20 between them on current form .. :o

20 a season strikers are marvelous, but to have two different ones in two seasons is a big achievement. We don't need a 20 a season man, if the team can contribute with a few on or around double figures and a couple to get 14+.

That'd do it, rather than one person on 20+ and no one else above 12.

On current form? 5 goals in 4 games... 'On current form' they'll get 20 goals with only a quarter of the season gone.

What a stupid comment.

Robson-Kanu was our best player on Saturday and we didn't start causing problems second half against Pompey until he came on either. Obita is only a back-up but regardless was our best player in pre-season and is one of the highest rated English players in his age category, probably the highest outside the Premiership now Wickham has gone.

andrew1957 The more I think about it Robinson seems a strange target. To try to purchase a player under a relatively long contract is always going to be more expensive than purchasing one on a free or short contract. And we are not recognized for our willingness to pay large transfer fees.

I would have thought a loan deal for someone like Kilgallon would be an infinitely better option as he is experienced so all we would pay would be wages. No doubt £20K or so a week but if we cannot afford to buy - surely we could afford a loan player for this season.

To me a season long loan for an experienced player like Kilgallon and purchasing a young up and coming player would have been a better option than taking Khulamo on loan – who himself is inexperienced at this level.

We would then have had Pearce plus experienced player as first choices with two younger players as back up.

yep tend to agree here, Robinson is 29 so an experienced CB but at the probable fee that Millwall are looking for not sure he would be value for money. Someone like Morgan at 27 would be more value for money with 3/4 good seasons left in him. I really think we should take a look at Killgallon though, he's a player we clearly know about and it seems Sunderland just want rid so the fee cant be that ridiculous, but clearly wages will be an issue.

West Stand Man
Victor Meldrew
ZacNaloen We always open with a low offer, it's called haggling.

And in the past have missed out on some players because of making derisory offers.
This is England old boy not the back streets of Marrakesh.

Go on then, give us a few examples where we have missed out through making derisory offers. Real examples not hna rumours.

Matthew Killgallon (offered circa 1 mill and went to Sheff Utd between 1.75 and 2 mill)

We would probably have wrapped up Tommy Smith without Pompey getting involved if we hadn't messed about so much with low offers.

Scott Brown and James McCarthy. We made low offers for both and missed out.

Errrr - not exactly true. Celtic offered what we publicised as our offer.

You are right. On current form the strikers would not score 20 - they would score 57. 5 in 4 so far (including HRK - who has scored both his goals playing in the front two).

It's a point of view. But do you think it likely that the deal was really done within a couple of hours of a court unfreezing Pompeys' funds, or do you think it might be that it was already done and Russo, Smith and his agent were stalling while they waited for the court decision?

Robinson is 29. I haven't seen much of him before, but those fans who actually watch and notice opposition players when we play teams will notice he won absolutely everything in the air against Long and Hunt on 6th August. No mean feat, especially against Long.

Good player, hope we can sign him or someone similar. Would bring experience and leadership to the defence as well which McDermott will probably want if he is to drop Harte/Griffin.

I have been looking at the Millwall fans sites this evening. One fan supposedly ITK said we offered 350K. If so you can see why Millwall went public - they are effectively saying pay up or go away.

The prevailing view seems to be that it would take 1.5 to 2M to prize Robinson away. Just cannot see us going that high. He is very well thought of though and could be a good option for us.

Evidence? I don't recall there being any hint from either side that we had actually bid, rather than there being a rumour on here that we had.

tomrfcurz Tommy Smith. Failed to meet the correct valuation until last minute where we seemed to persuade them to sell and then Pompey tabled a late bid. Had we met that offer a few weeks before he would be a Reading player.

Sorry, but that one doesn't fit either. We made a bid that was accepted. Who is to say that we would not have been gazumped even if we'd bid that earlier.

You'll have to try harder I am afraid.
