West Stand Man
tomrfcurz Tommy Smith. Failed to meet the correct valuation until last minute where we seemed to persuade them to sell and then Pompey tabled a late bid. Had we met that offer a few weeks before he would be a Reading player.

Sorry, but that one doesn't fit either. We made a bid that was accepted. Who is to say that we would not have been gazumped even if we'd bid that earlier.

You'll have to try harder I am afraid.

As I said, Rogers and the board we spent so long fannying about that we failed to get our man. If we'd just done the business quietly and met the asking price I have no doubt he would have been a Reading player,

Jimmy Russo has reacted angrily to suggestions that Watford star Tommy Smith is on the verge of being sold to Reading, calling the Royals’ offer for the Hornets talisman “derisory” and “insulting” and insisting there is no deal currently in place for the player to link up again with Brendan Rodgers.

The Watford chairman contacted the Watford Observer in response to a story we reported from the Reading Chronicle earlier this evening. This claimed Smith was poised to turn down a move to Premiership newcomers Wolves in favour of a switch to the Madejski Stadium for around £800,000 and that the deal could be completed within the next week.

But Russo has told us: “As far as I am concerned there is no deal whatsoever with Reading. I can 100 per cent guarantee that.

They have made a derisory offer which I am not interested in,” said the chairman, who also branded Reading’s valuation of the 17-goal striker “insulting” and added that he had “no desire” to sell Watford’s leading asset.

Can;t see us signing him as he would be far too expensive for us. We should probably look at a good league 1 Defender, might be good for next year and will not cost a fortune in wages and transfer fee.

 Come along now, do pay attention, Reading never buy a player for the current season, only ever players for 2/3 years down the line.

I bloody hope we don't sign him- why go for him when Kilgallon is available, younger, and decent. We need 1 transfer to get us excited!

If there is a small chance that signing kilgallon may also mean signing a forward as well then i would prefer this option!

Ian Royal 20 a season strikers are marvelous, but to have two different ones in two seasons is a big achievement. We don't need a 20 a season man, if the team can contribute with a few on or around double figures and a couple to get 14+.

That'd do it, rather than one person on 20+ and no one else above 12.

I agree but tell us where you think those other goals are gonna come from? Harte's position now looks in threat. As much as I'm a fan of McAnuff, he ent gonna score many. Kebe can only score on the break, Hunt is distinctively average. You're relying on The Beast in my opinion to get the goals and he still needs work on, long term he's the answer but we need someone to actually bang a few in. What was the issue with trying for Charlie Austin (when the club knew Long would likely leave) back in Jan, or Le Fondre who is banging them in? Robson-Kanu clearly showed that he was more effective on the wing as he is very good at setting up play.

He is a captain and a leader, so what we are missing at the back. If he can organise our back four, hes worth it.
Hes 29, so not worth anything like the fee we paid for M Mills. Mills was young and had a resale value.

The problem is hes a career millwall player, would he really want to move Championship clubs? Perhaps at 29 he feels he deserves a shot at success, if he comes to us expecting a promotion challenge then it could be a good boost. At least his millwall wages are likely to be low.

In terms of finding the cash we have a great bargaining chip in James Henry's sell on clause. We let him go to millwall on the cheap in return for getting a large future fee. Millwall rejected a number of multi million bids for him over the summer. I suspect they will suggest renegotiating this with us. It will give them long term security and mean we can snap up Robinson fairly cheaply.

The only thing is I hope this isn't going to lead to more frustration for young Pearcey. Hes barely put a foot wrong under Brian yet often finds himself out of the first 11. Khumalo will miss January for the African nations though, so certainly another defender is needed if we are to sustain a promotion challenge.

Frankly I think getting 4 decent centre backs together is quite ambitious. Not many teams in this league have the 22 man depth that we are lookign to go with.

 Splash £4m on Nicky Maynard and we'd be massive contenders. :D

Reading are contemplating a second bid for Millwall captain Paul Robinson after having an opening bid of £700,000 rejected - getreading can reveal.

Royals chiefs have been in talks with the Lions hierarchy for several days and it is anticipated that a follow-up offer will be made by officials at Madejski Stadium.

Although Millwall boss Kenny Jackett has told Brian McDermott that he is under no pressure to sell his 29-year-old skipper, a bid closer to the £1million mark may change their mind.

It is no secret that Reading are in the market for an experienced centre-back and Robinson, who has made 291 appearances for Millwall since joining as a trainee, fits the bill perfectly

I would be very surprised if he left Millwall to join us. He is part of the furniture there and it is not as if Millwall are desperate for money. Not to say that we aren't desperate for a central defender though. 2/10 likelihood of this happening imho. Will have to check with my 'wall contacts to see what they think.

Does he have any pace? Also anyone have any knowledge as to what Millwall fans think on the possibility of losing him? Still think Kilgallon would be a better option though (probably ruled out by wages though)
