Real togetherness about Chelsea last night. All playing for each other and when they scored the bench were alive with fist pumping and high gives, substitutes, physios etc. Amount of games you see when the bench other than manager hardly celebrate when a goal is scored.

AVB "This is a continuous persecution of Chelsea - continuous aggressiveness towards one club. It is unfortunate for you guys [the media] because you have to report on a brilliant win for Chelsea and we qualify first in the group. It is difficult for everybody and today this is difficult for you."

Smart thinking. That's sure to get the press on his side.

To be fair the reaction to this (from what I saw of the SSN coverage this morning) was quite a light hearted chuckle from the room. Although it's obvioulsy something that's bugging him he did crack a smile at times and it was a little tongue in cheek in the way it was delivered.

Fergie has always created a them and us mentality at Utd, be it with the press or the powers that be. I don't think AVB will be too fussed if it creates a bit more interest and bad press if he can turn that into a motivational and bonding tool within his squad.

I do take your point but Fergie had already achieved major things with Utd when he adopted that siege psychology so his position was fairly immune to potential press campaigns whereas, right now, AVB could probably do with a friend or 2 amongst the scribes I'd have thought.

Possibly right about Fergie. I can't remember his tactics with the press from the mid to late 80's so couldn't really confirm or deny.

My recollection is that he was always quite a cantankerous (sp??) individual and it's always been his approach. May well be wrong with that though.

But AVB learned from Mourinho, let's not forget.

I actually rather like him.

I also quite like AVB, I find him completely inoffensive unlike Mourinho. in fact I've quite liked all of Chelsea's recent managers.

AVB needs tome there, he is slowly phasing out the old guard who will never win Chelsea the Champs League and they still have Mourinho's shadow over that squad. It needs clearing and completely freshening up. Despite the flak he's taken AVB clearly recognises this. You will see a huge overhaul in playing staff at the end of the season if AVB is still there. Whoever is in charge needs to do it, too many senior pros with huge ego's at that club trying to run it. Needs gutting.

Are Chelsea more or less persecuted than the people of Darfur?

Fair play to Chelsea tonight. Real return to form. Thought they were superb in the second half. AVB's subs were spot on.
