Wonder if it's anything to do with the fact that England, along with Spain, were technically the only unbeaten sides in Euro 2012 from those teams in the top 10 already.

4 years worth of results so our 2008 non qualification drops off and 2012 QF gets added

Shock horror, good results = high ranking!

Italy also jumped up from, I think, 12th or 14th to 6th after some good form.

Brazil have lost 4 or 5 games in the last 18 months, including their last two, so I guess their ranking would've suffered because of that.

Weird not seeing Brazil on there, but as already said, 4th doesn’t look wrong when you consider the result of the teams around us in the rankings. We haven’t lost all that many games under Capello and now Hodgson.

We do seem to notch up a lot of wins in qualification rounds, but they always seem to be against various former members of the USSR

Well naturally as one of the continent’s top 8 sides, we don’t get to play Italy and Spain in qualifying all that much.

Guess how many of those top 10 sides we have beaten in competitive (qualifying and tournament) football in the last decade? Actually, tbf.....we've only played Portugal and Italy (victories achieved = ZERO) but that is mainly because we are seeded for the group stage and are unable to beat the first half decent side we come up against. We are the Tim Henman of world football :|

Is the answer Croatia, Denmark and Argentina (if you include WC2002)?

So England have beaten more of the top ten than they have lost to in this arbitrary last decade? With most of the defeats coming on penalties because the other sides can't beat us?

Unless I've miscounted or forgotten a huge chunk of history (not unlikely), that's remarkable.

Lowest Brazil have ever been. They will move up after they win the 2014 WC.

They'll probably slip even further down before then due to the lack of competitive qualification games won't they?

WC2002 was over 10 years ago so shouldn't count

Those rankings show that England underachieved in Euro 2012; they should have got to the semi-finals.

Germany also under-achieved; they should have got to the final.

My German colleagues were utterly distraught at losing the semi; contrast that with the most of the press and England fans who were generally happy to simply get out of the qualifying group, ecstatic to have won that group and who gave the impression that losing the quarter-final on penalties trying to play like a non-league team against a Premier League team in an FA Cup match was somehow a success......
