Extended-Phenotype In the same context, my Hindu friend could explain to you how an insult such as ‘P*ki’ is far more than just a word. It’s a violent term which conjures memories of vicious bullying, fear and significance which rips through her family history. As hard as it seems for those from dominant groups to understand, It’s a difficult insult to shrug off for those in groups which have suffered persecution.

Hope this helps.

So does calling someone "black" have the same effect?

It does if you use it in a derogatory manner.

I know you're only on a wind-up, TBM, but the pertinent bit is in bold for you. Applies to some and not others.

Terry takes the stand today.

Claims that he thought Ferdinand was accusing him of calling him a black cnut, to which he replied ‘a black cnut?’ Prosecution lawyers say lip reading not an exact science and that ‘a’ instead of ‘you’ changes the context entirely.

Terry also said that in the Chelsea dressing room he cleared it up with Ferdinand, asking him if he thought he had called him that, and that Ferdinand replied ‘nah mate’.

He'll be found not guilty, and agreeing with our Kes now, he'll get an 8 game ban if the FA are consistent in not allowing context to be taken into account.

If he is found not guilty then he wont get a ban......not if that ^^ is his argument, you can't get banned for asking a question and repeating what you thought someone had said to you.

Don’t want to (and won’t) go over the Suarez argument again, but some might have thought you couldn’t get a ban for saying ‘pal’ or ‘mate’, either.

Difference being Suarez admitted calling Evra "it".........Terry is stating that he asked Anton if thats what he thought he had said

I wonder if there is a case in history where a court has heard the word cnut so many times.

jeffrey Archer's libel case. The jury kept 'coughing' the word throughout the entire trial.

The case could be dismissed this afternoon if the judge sees fit.

B - He would call himself black,

Are you saying John Terry is merely describing Anton to himself? Or that perhaps the prefix of his insult is complimentary? JT could have equally said "you hard working ambassador for a sports development charity c/nt." No?

Then as you are clearly stupid you won't mind me calling you a thick f/ck, then.

So to call someone black is the insult? not the f*cking c*nt?
Anton is "young, gifted & black" oh no I've insulted him!

So I'm stupid & thick coz I don't want my taxes p*ssed up the wall for some petty charade.
There's far more important cases of real abuse & prejudice that get f*ck all attention.
Do you really think anyone is gonna change their ways cos JT was/is a nob and may get a puny fine?

Maguire
Extended-Phenotype in all honesty insulting someone for being white doesn’t carry the same historical weight of terror, violence, murder, enslavement and injustice as the black tag

This is the crux of it.

Although, not sure Anton Ferdinand's ever suffered any of that so i'm not sure how genuinely upsetting he'd find it.

^^ This.

I do find the whole sociological context of someone having a negative history educated into them, quite interesting. You have to wonder when it eases off really

Reading isn't your strong point, eh? Perhaps you are good at snooker or something. Again, why say it if it isn't part of the insult?

No, you've complimented him. Sorry if this is hard to understand. Is there any other language you'd prefer me to use? Or perhaps a picture?

So that means you're either arguing for a much heavier punishment or for scrapping the whole criminal justice system.

If Terry gets away with the "I wuz only being sarcarstik M'Lud" defence, then every time there is any prosecution of a similar nature, this will be the defence wheeled out.

I suppose its a better defence then claiming to be post-modernistically ironic.....

So you want the criminal courts to define the meanings of words & phrases?
Yes it was insulting, but was it less insulting if the word black was not used? or substituted with ginger? Welsh? Jock? spotty? hairy?
