Back from the game - Newcastle

by floyd__streete » 29 Sep 2012 18:33

Good game, excellent performance and we would have thoroughly deserved to have won if we had held on. Good stuff, on the front foot for the most part, wingers involved, in-your-face attitude. Sadly, that is perhaps as well as we can possibly play and we still let a lead slip twice, fail to win and concede our minimum two goals a game. Pearce being dropped and Gorkss retaining his place is a bit of a joke tbh.

Back from the game Newcastle

So much better today.

It is still hard to know if we have enough quality but all the sides we have played sit in the top 12 of the table so it is hard to judge, but my belief is that if we can keep the standard of today up we will finish comfortably above the drop zone.

McCarthy 6 - Did ok and could do nothing about either goal, but was lucky with the offside decision that probably saved him from giving away a pen and being sent off.
Cummings 6 - solid on the whole - not sure why he was dropped
Mariappa/Gorkks 6 - fairly solid but a bit of ball watching for the goals
Shorey 7 - a big improvement on Harte
Kebe 8 - good on the whole - glad he is back
Karacan - 7 - you know what you are getting with him week in week out of outstanding energy
Legs - 7 solid
McAnuff - 9 - outstanding today
Hunt - 8 also excellent - deserved the recall. High energy all game and a well taken goal
Pog - 7 held the line well.

Felt sorry for the ref. Easy to criticise him for the handball gaol but I did not spot it in real time either. We NEED video technology. Simply give teams 3 chances of a review a game so that they can ask for replays of controversial decisions. It would take seconds and stop all these errors.

Really like Mariappa though - looks good on the ball & quick. Wouldn't drop him.

Some div on BBCRB commented that Pog had a poor game. I do wonder what game they are watching. Thought he was our stand out performer 1st half - they couldn't cope with him at all.

Was a bit :| when I heard the team, but have to say that performance was excellent - we literally took our eyes off the ball from the kick off after our goal - the second half, however, had everything - and was the best game I've seen this season. Maybe our players are starting to gel a bit now - they certainly all got stuck in. I'd give them all 8/10 for that game.

Should, hopefully, give them a bit of confidence for Swansea away which could be our first win - players have to believe in themselves. McD deserves to do ok this season, I would really feel for him if we went down at his first attempt. Onwards and upwards.

Excellent performance, done twice on the counter by Newcastle but can't complain too much as we did it lots to teams last season.

Pog, Mapps and Hunt stand out performers for me.

Was a mistake taking Pog off (IMO) as we stopped holding the ball up for the 10 minute spell that ultimately led to Toon's equaliser.

Onwards and upwards, play like that and keep this team fit we'll be fine this season.

Have to say, utter joke that Shorey and Mariappa didn't start the season as our 2 main defenders.

Completely agree with all that - Pog should've stayed on. I like the look of this back 4 but do feel a bit sorry for Pearce. The question is who partners Mariappa as he looks a class act.

Here is the pic ZacNaleon tried to hotlink...

How could Marriner have missed it? He was looking right at it...

I agree with what the people who were at the game said...much better than we have seen so far this season. We continue to play like that and the points will come in bunches...and frequently.

Now THAT was more like it. Newcastle will feel ucky to have come away with a point, and who would have expected that a couple of weeks ago.

Really interesting that we had a team out there really taking the game to them, while I looked at the bench and thought we had plenty of options. That's a big change from a few weeks back and I'm still not sure how McD has managed it! But I now feel much more confident that he will get things right.

For the first time in ages i have come back from a game with a throbbing headache due to the passion. Makes a change from the tentative feeling verging on apathy this season. QPR started the slow climb back into the season for me. It was an excellent match and shows that trepidation far outweighs expectation sometimes. That feeling will not go away this season with each successive match. The gloom i felt pre-match was dispelled within the first 15 minutes with our in your face game play. The often pin drop atmosphere slowly built up and was excellent today. We more than matched Newcastle on the pitch an an urgent, cutting and almost championship performance where Newcastle were making forced errors due to the harrying play we finally knew we could adopt again. The Pog should have stayed with Roberts getting a run out. Harsh on Hunt should that have happened but i feel it would perhaps offer that quality up front we have been missing. Proud. Sadly two very vital points lost today but the confidence boost could do untold repair to the team.

Everyone played well today IMO, McAnuff and Hunt were my two top picks. Impressed with Karacan too, he never gave their midfielders a moment's peace.

Sound performance, we really got at Newcastle in the second half. The atmosphere when we finally got going was fantastic and really drove the team on, more of the same throughout the season!

Man of the match! - Hunt. Fantastic.
