Love the optimism of selling players for £20m. let's see how we could get there

McCArthy £3m
McCleary £3m
Obita £2m
Alf £2m
Williams £1.5m
Gunter £1.5m
Guthrie £1.5m
Karacan £1m
Pearce £1m
Morrison £1m
HRK £0.75m
Feds £0.5m
Kelly £0.5m

Total £19.25m plus anything for Akpan, Blackman, Cummings, Andersen, Kuhl.

Might just get to about 20m if we sell everyone.

Some nonsense valuations there.

agreed - but I was trying to be optimistic, but a number of players are in the final year of their contracts and we could be seen to be in "fire sale" mode, thereby reducing values.

I also deliberately ignored Pog and Drenthe as I don't think anyone will pay us for them

Erm...when he said nonsense values I think you got the wrong end of the stick when you suggested you were being optimistic.

What would be more realistic evaluations?

Last week the club parted company with its commercial director in an attempt to cut costs.

^^ This is actually quite pitiful. I wonder how much they are saving on this poor bloke's salary - not enough for the accountants to even notice I shouldn't wonder...

If the accountants don't notice a100k reduction in costs then they need new accountants....

Whether the move makes sense is probably one for debate, a commercial manager should be generating revenue so not having a good one looks like a false economy. I have no idea whether this bloke was any good or whether there was more to this the just a cost saving.

I suppose if the rest of the commercial department staff are up to it, they don't need a Commercial Director - but I still can't see that getting rid of him is going to make any difference at all to our costs, other than a few tens of thousands in salary, which, as I say, isn't going to make any noticeable dent in the debt.

Perhaps we don't have the capital to engage in the type of long term commercial projects that a good CD would come up with, thus making his whole role redundant

No not at all. When players like Scott Sinclair are being touted around at 3m, we really don't have a lot of value in our squad, especially with a lot of players in the last year of their contracts. A player is worth what someone is willing to pay. In the Championship, transfer fees are not high and our squad doesn't have a great track record in the Prem. I guess Obita is now our most valuable asset and may be worth up to 5m.

But once he has put a three year plan into place and any staff, then he becomes relatively superfluous

Might just get to about 20m if we sell everyone.

You forget that we have Nicky Hammond. If he can get £2m for Sonko then he can get it for Pearce. £2m is the rumoured fee for Kuhl, so you'd be looking at significantly more for Obita. I also think we should look to match the £3.5m Stoke paid for Jack Butland, particularly as McCarthy is a proven Premier League goalkeeper. Guthrie's fee could also be significantly higher - compare with what Hull paid for Huddlestone.

I think the whole point is moot. We don't need to make a huge profit, we just need to break even.

Ha. Seems that way doesn't it, but I'm sure there's a bit more to it then that.

my mother always said - it should be every managers aim to make themselves redundant through the training and advancement of their own staff - so in those terms he's probably done a very good job, and we wish him all the best wherever he goes

Plus, in the short term at least it probably cost them more as they would presumably have paid severance/redundancy costs.... so costing them more cash when there is a cash tax bill due.

I suggest the board members/chairman sacrifice their salaries first as they've not done enough to earn them by allowing things to get into this state.

They should sack their PR team, although to be fair, I doubt Sir John would listen to any experts employed to advise him on talking to the media as he doesn't always come across well and now that word has got out about the club being in financial troubles that's going to make sponsors think twice about handing money over and suppliers all the more eager to get what they are rightfully owed.

Redundancy for someone who has been in a job less than a year is next to nothing.

As for the chairman sacrificing his salary - has SJM ever actually taken a salary from the club ? I really don't know, but it might be interesting to know.....
