Times they are a-changing. Rapidly.

And people are learning all the time. And that's a huge positive.

The fallout from Whelan's ill-advised words is actually another positive step in educating people what is and isn't acceptable. But I really don't think rabid over-reaction such as we've seen / heard in the last few days is a healthy response.

Are Jewish and Chinese people walking around this weekend feeling persecuted and offended by what he said? Maybe some are, but I suspect the vast majority are they thinking "silly old sod".

More talk about Mackay and Whelan in the press today than Yacobs career threatening challenge on Costa. :|

Why the edit of my post?

Anyway, not sure why that would be unbelievable to anyone with a balanced mind. Think about what I've actually posted as opposed to viewing it through your blinkers.

It's progress we are talking about. It's happening and quickly. It can never be too fast but Racism was never going to be eliminated by the click of fingers. Let's see the progress that is being made and acknowledge it - for every old geezer who makes unwise statements there'll be another bunch of thousands who get the message through the media coverage it receives that such language is completely unacceptable.

It's just the rabid over-reaction that makes me uneasy because that can do damage and actually push some people the other way.

floyd__streete Has anyone seen that crime thriller film starring Stephen Baldwin, Pete Postlethwaite and Kevin Spacey?

Were Whelan's words ill-advised? Yes. Has he apologised. Yes.

He is the owner of a private company, do you want him to resign as rentaquote Clark Carlisle does  ? He's not a public servant. If a politician came out and said these things they'd have to resign, of course. I somehow don't think Greater Manchester Police will be investigating him. Perhaps EP and Leon - who somehow thinks he is edgy by using abusive words towards people he disagrees with when in actual fact it just makes him look immature - should campaign for the law to be changed so that he is prosecuted rather than wasting time discussing the issue with 'c unts' like me on here :!:

Not sure either of us have suggested any further action. I was merely stating that your mate sounds like a dick for trying to downplay this sort of language and attitude with the piggish Clarkson-esque "PC gone mad" shrug, which of course champions of the "racism doesn't exist in football" campaign will wobbly lap up to save a bit of face in what must be humiliating evidence to the contrary.

Your first line of defence was that it didn't exist. Second line of defence is what, "it doesn't matter cos those guys are old?"

Ftr, I have never said "going to get a Chinky tonight", nor have I ever "popped to the paki shop".

Nor used tropes which indicated the belief in a global Jewish conspiracy, fwiw.

I'm sure you have. Just like you're likely to have said something sexist. Which is just as bad.

Took me years to stop saying it. Though not nearly as long as it took me to stop saying Paki Shop.

When everyone around you has said it since you were young it gets very ingrained. I still slip up occasionally. Thankfully usually just in front of the wife, who picks me straight up on it.
