I dont subscribe to the theory of 'referees must be consistent' (what does that actually mean)

Just some level of giving the same foul roughly the same treatment.

I don't subscribe to the idea that something *should* have been a card or a penalty. Most of the rules have some sense of interpretation. especially, for example, handball.

I'm not sure under which law of the game that is a yellow.

It could be a red, for violent conduct. I guess a limp-ass head rub could be unsporting behaviour.

No Fixed Abode A late tackle comes under the same offence Paul and you can get two yellow cards during the game for that.

You don't seem to understand so I will try and make it clear for you my dear friend.

"over celebrating" is the offence - shirt off, jumping in the crown, lifting his shirt up - he could do all 3 in the one celebration but the guidelines state it is to be punished with one yellow card. Hope that helps.

Yaya - sent off after the final whistle?

If Countinho took his shirt off again - he would have got another yellow card. Or is your case - he couldn't get another yellow as he had already been book for the offence of over celebrating......

You are struggling here....let me break this down for you.

The offence is over celebrating. That could be..

1. shirt off
2. shirt over head
3. jump in crowd
4. pull his shorts down

He could do ALL of those things in a 20 second scenario but it will be dealt with by one yellow card. Guidelines.

If he scored another goal and took his shirt off then yep - second yellow and off he goes. That better?

Yaya Toure sent off for his penalty celebration?

Hoop Blah I have to agree with Paul that ref standards are no worse than they've ever been, there's probably a decent argument to say they're at the best they've ever been.

The problem isn't with the refs, it's with the players, managers, media and supporters who all have unrealistic expectations, a lack of understanding of the rules and, on top of that, the ability to scrutinise and debate every decision in a way never seen before.

Refs are on to a hiding to nothing.

Expecting them to do their job competently is not an "unrealistic expectation".

Taking your shirt off is a bookable offence.

Leaving the field of play without consent from the referee is also a bookable offence. Both separate offences, both by the rules of the game a yellow card. I know Oliver wasn't likely to give two yellows in the Coutinho scenario but by the letter of the law he should have been sent off for two yellow cards.

Now go and listen to some Olly Murs before your heart skips a beat.

You can't get two yellow cards for the same tackle though. All one celebration.

But they do do it competently. They're humans, who will make mistakes, and can't cover enough ground to get the same view of an incident that 30 TV cameras can so they're never going to be 100% perfect.

Furthermore, most of the time they're making mistakes there isn't a consensus of opinion in the Sky studio after review it half a dozen times from each angle so how people expect a referee to make the correct decision live and from his sometimes limited view I don't know.

Kes, just for a few minutes can you forget what you think the rule is and base your posts on what it actually is.

I will just say that Refereeing standards are far better than they were 20 years ago. The biggest difference I've seen during that time is the level of cheating and deception that goes on by the players, making the game much harder to officiate. Also the complete ineptitude of the people in the stands watching the game, who seemingly have no idea what the laws of the game are. Seems to be something that Reading fans are particularly bad for, embarrassingly rounding on the officials for 100% correct decisions.

Yeah and I never knew there was a new rule where a player can't get two yellow cards in the same passage of play.
