paultheroyal Antonio's current £ value?

Henry £ value at his peak?

Has nothing to do with it.

Henry was closer to ready for the Championship , yet not so good he'd have got poached from us if he had played regularly (which surely would be the case with Antonio given how Godlike you think he is). And he left at a time when we were in the right division for him to get games and kick on, with only a somewhat dodgy (at the time) Kebe as competition.

Still, I'm not saying it would be a big mistake, just a bigger mistake than Antonio, which wasn't a mistake.

paultheroyal Bloke had undoubted potential

Yeah, that's why so many people are/were doubting it.

Things have gone as well as they possibly could have gone for Antonio. That doesn't mean the original decision to get rid of him was wrong, but we've already been over this.

paultheroyal Amount of threads that actually come round to my original thoughts at the time etc

Antonio will go down as Reading's biggest transfer mistake and mis-judgement of ability since I have been supporting Reading from 1979. Majority of that is at McDermott's door however I am pleased he is back here and the club have made significant progress since his return.

That's rubbish !
For a start we let Charlie Austin walk away from the club !
But apart from that the Antonio situation was really not that different to the Sidwell one. Player was not interested in signing a new deal and moved on, at least in Antonio's case we made a decent profit on him

He wasn't signing because he wasn't playing! Bloke had undoubted potential and needed the run in the team, his loan spell at Southampton proved that.

Profit lol!!

He wasn't playing because we had better wingers at the time, who helped take us to a play-off final and a championship title in the two seasons Antonio really featured in the first team.

Why are you being such a little queen about this paultheroyal?

Shit happens - we actually have a good record of developing our young talent.

Massively tiresome conversation, stop it.

Not being a queen. It's an opinion. One I have mentioned many times before. Happy to drop it, keeps coming up so I will comment further, simple.

Neither of those faces seem to have any relevance !
Are you disputing we did ?
Or that Austin has turned into a decent player (better than Antonio) ?
Or that Simon Church has turned out to be a better player than Austin ?

im just disputing the relevance.

he was 15 when we let him go, and needless to say he looked nothing like the player he is now.
im saying that using that as a stick to beat the club with, or saying it reflects badly on us is a bit daft.
he wasn't good enough at the time, and has come on since. the end.

Good job no one was using it as a stick or reflecting on anyone !
If the original point made was that letting Antonio go was the worst mistake the club had made it seems pretty reasonable to point out that a far better player slipped out of our grasp. I don't think either were significant cock ups ,just the sort of thing that happens.
Antonio ain't good enough at the time, neither was Austin. Both have come on since. But in the context of the point made we let a far better player go the Antonio will ever be.
So Paulroyal is wrong all ways up !

for sure, these decisions are always a gamble to some extent.
the key to assessing the decisions is ensuring you do so on the information/knowledge we had at the time.
can we examine the processes that lead us to those decisions and see if we can be a bit more predictive of success? yeah, sure.

your points regarding the gist of your post are well made, I must admit I saw the Austin being let go bit, and rabidly leapt upon it, willy nilly without thought or understanding.

:?:

It's pretty much the same squad of players, bar a couple which BM shipped out and brought a couple in.

So why does Clarke have a get out of jail free card for when he took over from Adkins?

Clearly the only relevant bit is the form Clarke was sacked for, if you want to boil it down to one dimensional stats. Which no one but you does.

God how many times!!

He was good enough. Just never given the opportunity. That has always been my argument. 15 mins here or there being a headless chime was no opportunity. I and many others saw his ability.

Give him the contract, play him, and I am sure we would of been looking at a record transfer sale = mistake.

Good night.
