English football managers/Sean Dyche

by BR2 » 14 Feb 2017 13:39

The media is forever full of stuff about English managers, how they don't get a chance etc. and we ought to have one to manage the national team.
From these past few months 4 names come to mind (apart from the actual unproven England manage)r:-
Allardyce
Pardew
Howe
Dyche.

The first three above were the main contenders for the England job according to The Press.

Allardyce-got the job(we know what happened there) and making little difference at Crystal Palace.
Pardew-managed to turn Palace into a relegation side-looks like (and sounds like) a double-glazing salesman and nothing is ever his fault.
Howe-having spent oodles of money on new players ends up playing nearly all the players that have been with him for years (a kind of Sunday League manager who gets his mates to play)-a nice smile and always in a track-suit so coaching must be all that he does but appears to have no idea how to defend despite having been a centre-back himself.
Dyche-little club, little money,no voice, dresses like a bloke going to work in a provincial office and yet....is performing so much better than the 3 stooges and stands out head and shoulders above the others as currently the best English manager around.

Is it any wonder that owners go for foreign managers/ coaches?

I think there's a factor that because there's so much money in our game, so deep into the leagues, that players have to strive less to achieve and so their understanding of the game and determination is less developed. This sets them back on the management track. On top of that, the clubs will always be looking to bring someone in with a proven track record of success. It's far easier to see than in someone who won the League in Portugal, than someone who's kept a team performing above their realistic level in the bottom half of the PL.

And in fairness, getting a smaller club to overachieve is a completely different proposition to getting a big club to meet expectations.

There's also a tendency for people to be offered and dive straight into the biggest challenge they can. There's much less steady pathway and progression across two or three clubs. For both players and managers.

But ultimately, someone has to win the silverware each season, and there's no reason that can't be English managers if enough of them get the chances to manage through the leagues.

I like Dyche, I think he's done very good things with Burnley and has a positive but pragmatic approach. Needs to move on to a bigger club and build on his success at Burnley, before he could be considered for the England job IMO. Same with Howe, he's done nothing outside of Bournemouth. I don't see how you can get the England job without proving yourself at at least two clubs.
