Finances - can you make it add up?

by Snowflake Royal » 08 Aug 2021 13:02

There's been a lot of talk about the situation we're in, how improved it is on previously, how much the FL is penalising us etc.

We know that in 2019/20 the wage bill was about £32m, I think... Is there ny way we can make that add up with some guesswork based on who was in the squad, and who is still in the squad to work out where we might be at now?

I've given it a quick go for 2019/20, and I've got the numbers close.
Swift - £22k
Ejaria - £18k
McIntyre - £6k
Joao - £18k
Yiadom - £16k
Morrison - £16k
Meite - £20k
Miazga - £20k
Blackett - £20k
Cabral - £20k
Pele - £20k
Moore - £30k
Olise - £3k
Adam - £12k
Richards - £10k
Rinomhota - £6k
Puscas - £12k
Osho - £2k
Gunter - £25k
Obita - £20k
Baldock - £22k
Araruna - £14k
Masika - £10k
Barrett - £4k
Boye - £12k
McCleary - £25k
Virginia - £5k
Barrow - £20k
Aluko - £20k
Novakovich - £6k
Loader - £8k

That gives a total first team wage bill (including at least one player out on loan) of £24m. Plus 25% for Academy, coaching, NI etc (£6m!), takes it to £30m. Which is a little short.

It's just terrifying how much we must have been paying so many poor performing players who had repeatedly failed to perform adequately at our level.

On the plus side, if you vaguely map it across to today, it would be about £15m, which is better than I thought, and might mean if we can just survive this season things should start improving. But it's all guesswork.

Anyone got any better numbers / ideas? Took me about 15 mins.

As guesswork goes your numbers seem decent enough. It’s worth bearing in mind those astronomical figures are on the back of being in a transfer embargo for much of summer 2019. Just how reckless have we been?

Did we have to pay off Meyler’s contract back then too? I can’t recall but that might add to our wages. Mannone’s wages were still on the books too.

Would we also not have been still paying some managers? They don't earn as much as players, but they still earn quite a bit.

Popa was out on loan but we would still have had him on the books I guess? What about Teddy Howe?

Sam Walker’s wages too.
You can see why we are in such a mess.

Would have to include Meyler I believe. Prob 25k per week but a slight reduction to pay him off

Araruna and Masika were only here for 4 months though that season so can halve those. Doubt Araruna is 14k either

Need mannone as well

Plenty of rumours that those 2 were amongst our highest earners

At least they can be cut off our current wage bill

That seems about right. A few of us were saying last season that the wage numbers look likely to drop off a cliff. I wonder if agent fees are in there somewhere?

Puscas - £12k
Joao - £18k

Given their transfer fees low in comparison to others.

I think McNulty is on £5k a week himself. Some of those wages shock me for bang average players. What was our wage bill in 2011/12 when we went up with Brian? Does anyone know

Puscas cost us at least £6.5m and Joao was a reported £4.5m so that's going to have massively dented our numbers too and we've hardly sold any players.

I don't have anything other than speculation to base this on . . ..but I think you're underestimating a few wages here.

I would expect more like:

Swift - £25k
Ejaria - £18k
McIntyre - £6k
Joao - £22k
Yiadom - £16k
Morrison - £16k
Meite - £20k
Miazga - £25k
Blackett - £20k
Cabral - £20k
Pele - £20k
Moore - £30k
Olise - £3k
Adam - £20k
Richards - £10k
Rinomhota - £6k
Puscas - £25k
Osho - £2k
Gunter - £25k
Obita - £20k
Baldock - £27k
Araruna - £14k
Masika - £10k
Barrett - £4k
Boye - £12k
McCleary - £25k
Virginia - £5k
Barrow - £20k
Aluko - £20k
Novakovich - £6k
Loader - £8k

There's no way Baldock was on 27k. It was more like 20k. Puscas isn't on that much either I heard 15k

Liam Moore is on more though at £35k. Still though Ian's wage summary says it all. We have gone beyond stupidity with contracts we've given players

Guessing it’s not a case of getting exact numbers just an idea as to what the wage bill was compared to now. I’d say overall Ian prob isn’t far off

Most of them aren't wide of the mark. Our top earners shouldn't be on more than £15k with most players on £6-12k per week.

In the PL about £44m

In the Championship, not more than £20m, probably about £15m iirc

Yeah that's the idea. Try to get to last known number with the squad at the time and then guess for current players from there.

More positive looking at that, really could have put a massive dent in it.

When do we finally get Moore's insane wage off the books?

Jesus. There should be a law against that sort of stupidity.
