Royals and Racers At Wantage Fc tonight for their Southern league Div 1 central game against Berkhamsted. Hopefully a few goals !!
Edit F-T 1-1 Wantage the better team i thought and played far better than their league position suggested.

... was a surprising result that - on a night of some hefty beatings for our 'local' sides -
- I was pleased to see the 'Freds' putting in a commendable performance. Berko's goal came fairly late too - Bedford's win @ Harlow puts them top above North Leigh in this division.

I was at Hill Farm (Stubbs) Lane where Binfield were soundly whupped 1-5 by a very impressive Hanwell in IL1-South Central.

I see Basingstoke got battered by the same scoreline at Winklebury by Chertsey in the same division - didn't see that one coming either. :?

Bracknell trek across to Guernsey tomorrow (Wed) night - fog permitting?

Farnboro's lead at the top of SLP-South looks under threat as they fell 0-4 behind in the first half at HandY - did grab two back 2nd half. They do lead the division by 6 points but Hayes & Yeading have 5 games in hand and currently boast a 10-1-0 record - no-one else really in touch - though Met Police with Liam Ferdinand leading the line, are making up some ground with a decent run of form: 6 wins in 7.

Hartley beaten 0- 1 by Tivvy though some brighter news as Chesham bt Walton Casuals 2-1 also in the Southern Premier South section & Banbury won 4-0 at Tamworth in the Central and stay 3rd.

'Diddy' picked up three valuable points with a 2-1 win at AFC Dunstable in Wantage's league.

Below STEP04 was a designated Cup week so no major games of significance other than WESSP Alton picking up a good win 2-1 at USP .....
..... and the B&B tie - which R&R has probably posted about on the dedicated thread : Ascot {Eight} 8-2 NPT

One thing I have always thought about but never asked. Do clubs get their travel paid by the league/Guernsey FC to travel there?

Terrible result for Basingstoke last night, a real wake up call. They are playing teams around them and Chertsey were by far the best team seen this season, they will be up and around the top with their games in hand. Basingstoke have so many injuries and need to re-group.

Another decent crowd in last night, need to keep performing to keep getting the numbers in.

Re. Guernsey

They originally paid for the travelling teams expenses (I have no reason to believe that, that has changed), it was funded by their sponsors and was one of the conditions of their inclusion in the mainland leagues.

Thought that might be the case, cheers.

Hell of a commitment for players going over there on a Wednesday night.

AthleticoSpizz Yeah, being (mainly) part timers with full-time jobs I have never worked that one out....understanding bosses I guess?

I am nowhere near as close to the Bracknell squad as I used to be but a few years ago it used to be the case that about 90% of the players were either self employed tradesmen or sports coaches, they could pretty much pick and choose their schedules. I would think it would be the same for all the teams of that sort of level. Staggeringly high percentage of tradespeople.

That’s a bit of journey for part timers to have to make in midweek (one of the unlucky clubs in the division to get it as a midweek fixture), hope they can get some reward for it.

yeah that makes a lot of sense, especially for those Guernsey players where every-other game (away) is a major event.

I know a lot of semi pro players having played that level myself and most are tradespeople (not allowed to say tradesmen these days) with recruitment agents in 2nd then a few office workers with understanding bosses and even a few teachers

...big win in front of a big crowd tonight (Wed) for the 'Robins' - their lead at the top now 5 points, from Uxbridge who have a game in hand.

IL1-SC Guernsey 0-3 Bracknell Town - att 861 hat-trick for Dave Tarpey

In SL1-C Aylesbury Utd bt Kidlington 3-0 and Thame won by the same score at Biggleswade

In CCL-PS Guildford overcame Farnham 5-2 at The Spectrum.

I sloped down to Kennels La (nr Pyestock between Cove and Fleet) for an Aldersh!t Cup 1st Round tie

Fleet Spurs 0-2 The Army Rep XI att about 20 odd
- Army Lads were (as you might expect) fitter and faster and threatened to overwhelm 'Spurs' early on - hosts took an age to grind up the gears. Finally with the game petering out 'Spurs' had a real go and were quite unlucky not to score - found a hitherto untroubled keeper in fine form.
- Suspect the visitors correspondingly dropped the rate a touch late on. They often roar through the early rounds of this then either scratch cos they've all been sent out on a 'Tour'; or go out to a big club - not that there are any really entered this season.
They now travel to Godalming Town in the next round who are at the same level as Fleet Spurs.
- not actually sure they've completed this competition for a couple of years now anyway - nor the lesser/Junior/Sunday tournaments. They usually hold 'double-header' Finals at the Rec over a Sat/Sun late in May.
(Is run by the Aldershot FA which is a sub-division of the Hants FA - I think there are about 4 or 5 of them)

- Black mark for the Southwood Pavilion: No Bovril on a very chilly night and no back-up option of Cup-A-Soup - how hard can it be?
They even had Bovril listed on their poncy TV Screen bill-of-fare but neither of the staff in the Tea Bar tonight, had a clue where it was stored tbf they did make quite an effort looking for it :)
- I might have to start taking my own jar about with me or secret a couple of Oxo Cubes in the lining of the 'Anorak' perhaps

Just out of interest anyone know if any Bracknell fans were able to make the trip to Guernsey?

Four Of Clubs Results from yesterday:

Saturday30th October

FA Trophy 3rd Qualifying Round

Herne Bay 0-2 Binfield att 263 Bunting and Harris (pen) late on for ‘Moles’

Late in posting but went to this :(
Good to see programmes being sold, though they clearly expected more interest as someone went round the ground just before KO trying to get rid of the ones still unsold (and there seemed quite a few). The published attendance seems to differ slightly from the one that was read over the tannoy (260). Pretty good, though a lot higher than than for the league game the week before when they had over 400, which was higher even than for Margate in the division above who were playing on the same day!

As for the game, HB the better side in the first half, greater possession (and looking skilful with it) and more chances, but didn't think they tested the keeper enough. Never really felt like they were going to concede though. Second half however was one way traffic and it was no surprise when Binfield took the lead as they'd already had one cleared off the line. The penalty in the last 10 mins came after a good save by the HB defender on the line. The HB manager (who was in charge of Canterbury City when they had that FA Vase run a few seasons ago) was then sent off. Not sure why, and he seemed confused too, but heard fans near me wanting the ref to get on with it (he seemed to take a long time to get his red card out going to speak to his assistant first for what seemed a straightforward decision) so wonder if it may have been to do with that.

And just to put the result into perspective they were the first goals HB had conceded at home this season  Neither side had reached the first round proper before, could see how much it meant for Binfield.

Fair comment ...BUT actually .... there were only four games 'in range' last night (Wed) : the other obvious one to pick would have been at Guildford v Farnham ...and it finished 5-2 :|
- but my mate still hasn't been to the Spectrum - so I tend to keep back one's that I know I may be revisiting anyway soon-ish.

The other two Aylesbury Utd (@ Chesham) & Whitchurch (also a 'minor' Cup Tie) - I'd visited both already this season .... so thought Fleet Spurs deserved my attention and I thought it would be a nice easy journey :? .........
(NOT : they're digging up f£(&ing the drains in Eversley - so got sent on a stupid *&^%ing diversion off the A327 and up around Finch again)

...had another part-motive - my eldest lad remarked the other day, that his NL badge-collection  includes Fleet Spurs but it's a cheap and nasty plastic safety-pin version - the sort you get free with a kids comic - so I wondered if they were issuing proper one's. The Bovril-experience on the night, rather led me to believe no-one there would have known where they were kept - and there weren't too many home officials about to ask either.

Thought this recent statement (issued on the Mon 15th Nov Bulletin) from the Combined Counties League about measures to overcome the current shortage of officials warranted an audience:

MATCH OFFICIALS

You will probably be aware that there is a severe match official shortage throughout the country at Steps 5 and 6 and seems to be getting worse.

There are myriad reasons and even the recent promotions of a number of referees to Level 4 has not helped as they are being immediately gobbled up by the FA for other competitions

It is, therefore, sad to report that matches in Division One may well not have even one assistant at times let alone two. When this happens home clubs must find one person to step in and if there are no assistants, then one person from each club is needed. If requested, such persons are entitled to the full fee.

One possibility is that we put on more midweek matches for a while but this needs to be agreed by clubs if they have previously been scheduled for a Saturday. Can any Division One clubs, therefore, who would be willing to change some Saturday matches (i.e.lower mileage games) to midweek: i.e. less than 20 miles between the clubs concerned) please let me know. This is far from ideal but should guarantee that you will have three officials as there is obviously less demand in midweek.
UPDATE: So far just two clubs have come forward to support this idea

One of the reasons advanced by the FA is that some officials are giving up due to the levels of abuse they are receiving, especially the younger ones. Please do whatever you can to make officials welcome and ensure that their visit to your ground is an enjoyable one as much as possible.

Re: The Non - League thread

Four Of Clubs Thought this recent statement (issued on the Mon 15th Nov Bulletin) from the Combined Counties League about measures to overcome the current shortage of officials warranted an audience:

I am glad its getting highlighted.

Thing is - why dont people get this. Abuse referee's you lose referee's and less take it up, its a simple fact now. We have reached crisis point.

So what has happened?

"poor refs" are being promoted from the very lower leagues to the semi pro ranks. These refs are then having to move up to the higher level, and National Refs are filling into the football league. Get it now? Hence why i have been banging on for months that its at a tipping point, and where fans moan about quality, you aint seen nothing yet!!!

Something has to be done, and done now. It really is bad. Last year in Basingstoke alone, there were 57 referees. Meeting i was at this week there are 27 signed on. Crisis what crisis!! This is happening up and down the country.
