Nameless I’d be unsurprised if these ‘short term’ signings are actually part of the squad rebuild for next season. We don’t actually need another centre back or a winger at the moment, but getting them on board now with an agreement to extend the contract seems smart thinking.

Indeed, I think your right. I see Get Reading reporting Tom Ince maybe signing a deal to stay as well. Clearly see him as a cheap option for next season to get the wages down and will be Meites replacement no doubt.

Does that mean his dad will be staying too…..

Players looking for a club and a way back into the game tend to outperform previous expectations. They have a point to prove and often do.

Danny Drinkwater would argue against this. In fact, I probably wouldn't say they "often" do, but I take the point in concept.

.

Ah, Danny Drinkwater, the current scapegoat of some of our fanbase (Honorary Section Chairperson, Tim Dellor) who seem unable to enjoy their football unless they have one of their own team that they can castigate week in, week out, regardless of how they perform. Those less blinkered and neutral pundits have been giving Drinkwater credit for far more positives than negatives in their game.

If you're suggesting I'm "one of those", I'm not. I wouldn't rather we had either Tetek or Rino play in front of Drinkwater as they are not as good technically. He's improved recently and had some solid performances, but he's also been poor for a large part of this season as well, let's not ignore that. Not saying I don't like him, he's obviously a good player, but, on the flip side, I think people seem to have short memories in forgetting that he was pretty poor for the first half of the season minimum, with flashes of quality shown.

He is currently on considerably more than Meite and will probably be in higher demand given Meite’s injury worries.

Not to say it’s impossible for us to sign him on lower wages than he’s on at Stoke, but he isn’t an obvious “cheap option”.

I agree.

Often players impact the game positively for their team by their positional awareness.

In doing so they can prevent things developing for the opposition.

Getting a foot in; deflecting a pass; stopping a turn, being in the space where the next pass could be and thus forcing opponents to go long, or go back and start again or create a counter.

Much of this work goes entirely unnoticed by many fans, who then do notice when a pass is misplaced.

But sometimes (not always, I appreciate) a pass can appear misplaced because a teammate has not been switched on enough to make the run.

I remember many years ago watching George Graham play for Palace at Elm Park towards the end of his playing career; and it seemed to me that he kept putting the ball into areas where none of his teammates were; sometimes where nobody was; and I thought at the time that he had lost it (I was 13 at the time- but playing a good standard of football).

But it was pointed out to me after the game by my then coach, that George was always playing the right ball and was creating space for others all the time; but none of his teammates were aware enough to make the right run.

George must have been very frustrated. I think Drinkwater is noticeably frustrated at times.

Our Manager does know a thing or two about the role of a central midfielder.

Certainly more than every single person who posts on this forum…….

LOL at it being everyone else's fault that Pisswater can't pass.

If your team mates aren't there, don't play the pass. He's been here almost an entire season, if he doesn’t know what runs his team mates make at this point, it's on him.

Not like his misplaced passes are the sort of clever balls you'd see Caskey or Matejovksy make where that was the excuse either. They're so basic it hurts.

And LOL at the idea that he's sweeping up stuff the plebs can't notice. The guy can't manage the pace of the game and is frequently missing from where he should be.

Some people will excuse anything for big name and a winners medal.

Since he signed the defence has actually been playing well. Who/what would you change?

Yeah he was never signed to start, he was always going to just be cover.

I think once we are safe we will see him play, same goes for a lot of the players who should be here next season but don't necessarily get game time at the moment. Would really like to see Clarke get some minutes on the pitch, think there is a decent player there. Liked what I have seen of him so far.

Yep, fully expect him to get minutes in one of the final games if we are safe.

For now, he is cover for injuries and has the chance to impress in training to get a new deal.

The sooner we're safe the better. I'd prefer us to rotate these squad players in and out over several games with most of the first team still present so they aren’t all dropped in for one or two games in a 'lesser' side.

How many points clear do we need to be of relegation to be truly safe? Just thinking of the slight risk of Barnsley kicking up a stink about the points deduction, or does it look like that’s dead and buried now? If we’re clear by one point is it iffy?

You can’t tell, while there seems absolutely no basis for Barnsley to make any kind of fuss we can’t speculate what deduction might come along. I suspect there is more chance of us losing all our remaining games and Barnsley winning all theirs than us being deducted extra point ps this season as the result of one team with a vested interest complaining.
So they answer is we need one more point than Barnsley and Derby can get....

That's balls.

We're probably safe now, but a win today and a Barnsley defeat would probably do it. They'd have six games to get 11 points, that's 4 wins or 3 wins and 2 draws. For a team that would be on DDWLDL.

And any point we gain in our last 5 erodes their margin for error
