Players that share running styles

by Cripple Creek » 16 Apr 2022 21:40

It may sound an odd comparison but whenever I see Michael Olise play for Crystal Palace these days (and by golly he is looking every inch the Premiership star) the way he carries the ball always reminds me of how Paul Gascoigne used to run with the ball at his feet and seem to glide.
Not a football comparison completely but Phil Foden's running style always reminds me of the legendary US sprinter and stupendously good athletics pundit Michael Johnson: straight back and piston-like pumping of the legs.

There's what I called the Robben running style...very effeminate use of the arms

Quite a few tricky players use it

There's the David Luiz amble favoured by CBs caught woefully out of position 40 yds from goal.

There have been a few Reading centre backs over the years with a unique 'non-running, running style'.

Sterling looks as though he has something stuck up his backside and Foden's arms are all over the place like one of the lollipot men.

As for gliding across the pitch , mentioned by the OP in relation to Olise, I felt that when seeing Luis Figo for Barcelona who despite looking bulky in build definitely glided about the pitch.

Potential (smallish) spin-off … Best Gliders

I’ll go Thierry Henry

Best description I read is that he runs like he is carrying some shopping bags.

Zidane in his pomp, just glided around mainly because he was controlling the game at whatever pace he fancied.

Dylan Kerr had the ultimate trying not to drop the 2p coined wedged between his arse cheeks running style.

That description of Dylan Kerr's running style is spot on and I have a very vivid recollection of him running in said style up the left wing. Did he not also often have his head cocked forward like a chicken but in the attitude of a puppy expecting a treat? He was a bit of a footballing menagerie when I come to think of it.
