Magnificent 7 v2 ?

by Millsy » 09 Jul 2022 10:34

I've lost track of how many we've signed, probably will be around 7..

We all know what a disaster the last Mag7 was. Will this be similar?

No. The magnificent 7 were signed on one day at the end of the season, by a new manager, some for substantial money.

We've currently signed three players across about 3 weeks before the season has started by an existing manager, two of them are loans and they're all free.

Unless you count Ince, Hoilett, Clarke, Yiadom, Camara, Azeez, and all the other new contracts for those who were here last season and had expired. In which case its way more than 7.

Suspect 7 is a pretty average number of signings in a summer , big difference here is none of our signings are Scottish.

The magnificent seven were signed on transfer deadline day by Tommy Burns in the days when the transfer window was open to around end March

Happy to be corrected if any of the above is wrong

Not forgetting the dazzling due of Andy Legg and Jason Bowen who were signed in the January.

We made some cracking signings the next season too.

Mark Reilly
Andy McLaren
Sean Evers
Elroy Khromeer
Peter van der Kwaak
John Polston
Mass Sarr
Keith Scott

As we supposedly have 7/8 trialists maybe another magnificent 7 will be announced next week.

OMG that must rate as out worst ever season for signings. Evers was big money too.

Grant Brebner was signed at that time and was ok though

We did sign Brebner, Murty and Casper that season so not all bad.

Evers cost £500,000
Kromheer cost £150,000

Keith Scott is my all time biggest WTF signing. IIRC he played at the Madejski for Wycombe not long before signing for Reading, and looked completely useless. I thought it was a joke when then suddenly popped up as having joined Reading.

Yeah I remember when we played Man Citeh just after he had joined and been horrified we signed this big lump up front.

You obviously started watching after Ian Branfoot. What about Colin Gordon, Nigel Vaughan, Mike Conroy? FFS the thought depresses me,I need some beer.

Yeah, I started going properly around 93ish. I remember half way through the championship winning season my dad turned to me and said "it's not usually like this, don't expect it to always be good!"

And then he scored that goal against Bradford, where he dropped a shoulder on David Wetherall and scorched past him like an Olympic sprinter, finishing like prime Gary Lineker, and frankly nothing else mattered any more.

I think there was more shock than celebration. In any case it disqualifies him from any Worst-11 lineup.

1 homesick player who was sold pretty much before he kicked a ball, one player caught doing drugs, a dodgy keeper, a world class winger in the right circumstances, those circumstances being at home to Luton or on the highlights DVD his agent sent us prior to signing and an old cart horse from Wycombe, can't remember too much about the rest
