Stranded Forest in advance talks with Jesse Lingard and are willing to smash their wage structure to get him.

They clearly appear to be going down the shit or bust route to PL recruitment. If they stay up, then they'll be OK, if they go down esp. as Lingard will be wanting upwards of 100k pw (some reports saying he wants 180k and could get that abroad) - then they could be in a world of pain if they drop.

The fact that Lingard hasn't found a club despite being publicly on the market for the last year should tell him all he needs to know about his wage demands.

Looks like this is done. Just a 1 year deal. If 180k pw is accurate, with no fee this will cost Forest around 15m and they can part ways next summer. Might not actually be that bad a deal.

That wage is supposedly if all bonuses are triggered. Still madness from Forest though.

If there’s no signing on fee for Lingard on the face of it seems like a reasonable deal for Forest to me.

Madness would be any kind of deal that would eat up parachute money if relegated.

That said, having one player on superstar wages could be very unsettling for the squad so it’s not a deal I would be in favour of.

Think it is a pretty good arrangement for both player and club.

This is my take, it is a one year deal so there is no hedging of their future really in terms of PL money a 15m outlay - which is about the most it will be - is peanuts and if they drop both parties get to walk away and move on with their lives. You can see deals like this becoming more common I think where "star" players will commit for a year to a club that they wouldn't normally do, for wages that seem stupid but due to no fee are actually well within budget. The only question mark is, is Lingard a big enough player that it doesn't cause friction within the squad.

Financially, it is much better for Forest to potentially commit 180k for one year than 75k pw for 3.

The Athletic are reporting that the £180k figure is a red herring too and that it's close to half that (though still enough to make him comfortably their highest earner). So it makes sense as a deal.

It took me a few reads to realise that Schmeichel wasn't on holiday with his family and a massive dog.

Following the Schmeichel news, Leicester looking to hijack Fulham's move for Bernd Leno, albeit the keeper would rather stay in London and has agreed personal terms with Fulham.

Amongst a few signings, Fulham have acquired Israeli winger Manor Solomon. Interesting this as they have taken advantage of a ruling that I didn't know had been applied - owing to the ongoing conflict, FIFA is allowing foreign players at Ukrainian clubs to suspend their contracts for one year from 31st July. So Solomon is effectively a 'free agent', but will rejoin Shakhtar Donetsk next August.

Why should playing for a ‘lesser’ club mean less chance of playing for the national team?

It shouldn't but it really, really does happen

Psychologically, I guess those picking squads/teams will see someone in a team not winning and associate that with the performance of individuals. With the inevitable consequences

True it happens and I see the POV you describe, and true to a point but I think it’s a bit of a shame, should be the best player / form who ever it is wherever they play but that’s an. Ideal world which we don’t live in.

No idea if his contract was running down, but Fulham have a cracking deal on Bernd Leno. £8m total fee, but only £3m up front, £1m based on appearances, and the other £4m contingent on staying up.

Marc Cucurella is a good full-back, but is he really £50m good?

One for the future for Chelsea - they have signed Carney Chukwuemeka from Villa. Interestingly* whilst Chukwuemeka has played for England age group sides, he is eligible for Austria, having been born there.

And Wijnaldum to Roma on loan for the season.

Really odd one this. Riqui Puig, who was going to be, if not 'the next big thing' at Barca then certainly quite a big thing, is joining LA Galaxy of the MLS. At 22 years old.
