The football romantic in me would love to see Messi sign off for Argentina with a World Cup. Real international honours all that is missing from his career. The squad just looks that bit better than in previous tournaments - De Paul and Paredes a very solid midfield base, Martinez established as a goalscorer for Inter. Defence remains the weakest part of their team on paper, but they are unbeaten in over three years (Brazil at the 2019 Copa America), and they have only conceded six times in their last 21 games.

Just wonder if they will arrive undercooked. Since their June win over Italy, they have played only Estonia, Honduras and Jamaica.

Was listening to a podcast on the WC yesterday and they said the undefeated record of both Brazil and Argentina right now is misleading and highlights something that should be a concern to them, that they play so few competitive matches. Argentina are about to break the record for the longest unbeaten run, and Brazil are not far behind them, with Brazils only loss being to Argentina

elsewhere I was lightening to a French journalist who said there is genuine concern around the French team as there are so many players injured and out of form. Their squad is announced today and he said most people still couldn't guess at the final players in it as they think there will be some surprise omissions and additions. Giroud is now tipped to be in the squad, having previously considered to have played his last ever game for France (against Denmark). he needs 2 goals to equal the French all time top goalscoring record. This journo said there is a bad feeling that France could even replicate their 2002 disaster

I can't really see anyone beating France for the remainder of the World Cup following their second string team's loss to Tunisia. I don't think the latter result means an awful lot in terms of France's future performances. The thought of Mbappe against Maguire and Stones - should it happen - well, frankly, the two defenders have my sympathy. I hope it is as painless as possible for them.

So annoying that I can’t see them not winning their group and thereby avoiding Brazil in the 16. Even in the QFs they’re only like to get Croatia or the mess that currently masquerades as Germany. Expectation would therefore be they’d reach to the SFs and get done by France. So your feeling would look to be likely to check out…
