MATCHWATCH : Burton Albion (h)

by Sutekh » 30 Sep 2024 10:00

When : Tuesday October 1 2024, 8pm
Where : Madejski Stadium, Reading, RG2 0FL
Capacity : 24,161

Burton Albion arrive in Reading next for another game that subscribers to Sky Sports can watch on the telly (though it's not a main game).

On top of that Burton are stuck in the bottom 4 still looking for their first league win of the season and as we all know it was only a couple of weeks or so ago that Charity FC turned up to bale out bottom of the table Leyton Orient who were also looking for their first league win so alarm bells should be ringing already on this one all around the place.

The Brewers' pointage so far has come from 4 draws but 3 of those draws have come from 3 of their 4 away games, so we might find them rather frustrating to play against just like the miserable game we had to sit through last season.

There was quite the turnover in playing staff over the summer with 21 players arriving (they'd signed 11 before the end of June!) including 4 on loan and 9 departing. The shake up was probably as much down to the appointment of former Wimbledon snd Chelsea academy boss Mark Robinson as manager as much as last season's poor showing which saw Burton narrowly avoid the drop to the 4th tier, even though they took 4 points off of Reading Charity FC.

Billy Bodin has netted 3 so far and is leading scorer but the highly rated striker Danilo Orsi from Crawley is one of the new signings still looking to bed in properly so there should be enough to keep the Reading defence occupied. Points have been gained at a useful Mansfield and also at Rotherham, where Reading go on Saturday, so there needs to be a suitably organised approach from everyone and not just a "we've only got to turn up" thought.

Pereira remains sidelined along with Dorsett and Yiadom, there won't be any chance of the former returning until late October, Dorsett until November and Yiadom until some point next year but Button and Abrefa should be able to cover sufficiently. Think, though, I'd expect a certain amount of squad rotation from Selles on the back of 3 games in a week and the visit to Rotherham looming.

Historically

Burton at home is becoming a bit of a frustrating bogey for Reading. There have been 3 games between the two teams in Reading and the Brewers have avoided defeat in two of them. In fact they haven't lost on either of their last two visits, one being that infamous travesty devised by Stam and the last being the instantly forgettable 0-0 from last season.

How to follow the game

  1. Get a ticket and travel to the game
  2. The Sky button thingy
  3. Listen to Radio 5 Live and/or a myriad of other radio stations for score flashes
  4. Ring/text a mate for updates
  5. Use an RoyalsTV subscription
  6. BBC Radio Berkshire (FM : 104.4, 104.1 or 95.4 depending where you are in the area)

They're becoming one of my most hated teams. 2 dire performances against them last season, that infamous 2-1 loss with the worst goal of all time. Would love it if we beat them.

Of course, it's perfectly set up for their 1st win of the season. All I would say about Charity FC so far this season is that the poor starts of Orient and especially Bolton surprised me, and neither of them were real relegation candidates. By contrast, winless Burton are genuinely a poor L1 team.

Agreed on both Bolton and Orient and subsequent results for both of them have been good.
Charlton on the other hand are showing that their early start flattered them and are as poor as they looked against us.

As for Burton I am expecting either a 3-0 win for us after an early goal or a dreadful 0-0.

Looking forward to this as I missed Saturday and I do love a midweek game to break up the tedium of the working week!
Whilst - with our history for generosity in such circumstances - playing a team with zero wins is a bit of a concern, I don't think Orient is a fair comparison. They'd had a tricky start and I'd expect them to be a solid mid-table team whereas Burton will likely be fighting relegation. Fingers crossed for a straightforward home win.

The big question, of course, is how many goalkeepers the useless American referee will allow Burton to have on the pitch at any one time.

Sometimes you're Darius Henderson up at Grimsby and sometimes you're ... that.

Anyway, comfortable and slightly dull 2-0.

Just received push message for tickets.
I am expecting the lowest gate for a while tonight.
Is a general malaise setting in?

The same messaging we get before every game? Midweek attendances have been killed by Sky red button not malaise IMO.

Add in a couple of English teams in the Champions League on TV and our rotten recent record against Burton and that won't help.

Midweek games always have low attendances.

Based on my data, we averaged 9,452 home fans for midweek games last season - compared to 12,879 for weekends and bank holidays. That's nearly a 27% drop off and the midweek games included an abnormally high 11,629 against Oxford. Aside from that, every midweek game had a lower attendance than our lowest Saturday attendance.

It looks like we'd sold around 9,156 tickets for this one, which may mean we're on course for better crowds than Derby (8,280) and Carlisle (7,899) last season (depending on how many season ticket holders turn up).

There's probably an element of malaise, but that affects the crowd for every game. The big drop for midweek is likely due to less children going; adults having difficulty getting back from work or other commitments in midweek; the fact people can watch it on TV; etc.

As an aside, Fleetwood brought 111 on a Tuesday night last season. Wouldn't be surprised if the number of away fans is lower than that, given Burton brought 176 supporters to the Saturday game.

Should be an opportunity for goals in this one, Burton have already conceded a lot.

Assume Abrefa has a knock, because he's seemed fine to me. I don't see Garcia being less exposed than him.

Good luck to Garcia. Needs must, but a fantastic opportunity for him to stake a place for that left-back position going forward.

Really think dropping Abrefa, if he isn't injured, is a sign of an idiot and if he has a knock what's he doing on the bench?

Presume the poor fella just can't cope with 2 games close together

Anyway, get the points and no one will care.
