Nice. He would have hit 200 first team appearances some way into the 1962-63 season, when he was 22.

Interesting - I'd have assumed olden-day players wouldn't come close to this, just because of the increase in matches these days compared to then.

I just used top-flight games (original post stated Premier League games), so he played 35 (aged 17), 42, 40, 40. 10+22, 41
February birthday so already 22 at start of that 6th season.

I've just looked at George Best, similar era, a bit younger (May 1946 birthday vs Feb 1940, so again, 17 at start of first season)
17, 41, 31, 42, 41, 41, would have been very similar age, 22 and a bit, when he hit 200 games.

Bobby Moore would have been 23, eased into the team when 17, 18. Geoff Hurst, Charlton brothers all a couple of years older still.

He barely played another 40 top flight games.

Yes, it was sad that, injury had crocked him in 1962 and he finished his career with those last 3 games 2 years or so later. He was 29 I think.

Gianluigi Donnarumma. Made his Milan debut aged 16, and by the end of the 2018-19 season - he had turned 20 in the February - he had played 164 games. He reached 250 appearances for Milan two seasons later, aged 22 and a bit, by which time he had already played 30 times for Italy.

He's now 25, and including 70 caps for Italy, has played 450 senior games.

Was looking at some records over the weekend to see when Ronaldo might break some more, and spotted that the person with the 2nd most professional appearances ever is still playing, still first choice for his club and is now 63 games away from breaking Peter Shilton's record

Fabio, the Fluminense goalkeeper, is 43 years old, about to turn 44, and still playing as first choice for them. If you weren't aware, Fluminense are one of the big boys of South American football and were Copa Libertadores winners (South American Champions League) for the first time in their history just last year, so fair play to him. Looks like they are in a relegation scrap right now though.

update - appears to now be 55 behind and as the first choice goalkeeper he is playing around 60 games a season. considering he is playing at a decent level, even if Fluminense want to move him on he could probs drop down somewhere and in a years time have overtaken Shilton

It is suggested that he played in the second division until he was 58, a claim which seems fanciful. Only Youtube footage of him is keepy-ups.

He apparently recognised as the oldest currently active professional player by Guinness and his validation took 4 years to complete. He’s now played for 48 years for 30 clubs across both South and North America plus periods in Spain and Italy. He is a centre back with well over 2000 appearances.

He says he feels like a 25 year old and his ambition is to keep playing football. He’s had just 8 operations over his career and one doctor even advised him to retire but he declined that opinion - over 40 years ago!

15 years ago, he was also player manager at Albion Montevideo for 6 years.

For the record Kazuyoshi Miura is currently the oldest player (at 57) to have scored in a professional match. He is currently on loan at Atletico Suzuka after joining Yokohama FC almost 20 years ago.

Aberdeen got 31 points from their first 11 league games (2.81 PPG), and have managed just four points in their next 12 games (0.33 PPG), a differential of -2.48 PPG that the Guardian says can't be 'beaten'.
