Doing the 92

by stealthpapes » 29 May 2025 11:25

1. Daniel Storey of the i did all 92 grounds this season. He wrote a solid piece on our troubles.

That's here: https://inews.co.uk/sport/football/read ... ny-3348900

The ending gets me.

2. So as the season finishes, there's a review of the whole thing here: https://inews.co.uk/sport/football/thin ... 92-3713551

I think my favourite section is

15) Every football club has at least one old boy who has roughly 300 pin badges attached to a waistcoat or hat or jumper. Spend five minutes walking near him and hear how many people say hello to him or wish him good day, as if doing so is part of their own matchday routine. It will cheer your soul.

but its full of little details that have me slightly welling up in a Birmingham Costa.

3. He's also done a review of the grounds. We're not rated highly.

4. I'm in the mid-50s of the 92 now (rough count of 11 in Prem, 17 in Championship, 19 in League One and 7 in League Two, not all with Reading tbf) - maybe one day I'll set out to get them all done. Think it needs a season in League Two :?

Nice one, papes.

Might get round to thinking about how many I’ve been to.

Trouble is, many are the old grounds only ( eg Sunderland, Arsenal, Oxford). Would they count?

Purist would say no, right?

I think they're fair game and there's another trip to get the new ground sometime.

For the record I'm not counting the Etihad, as I took my mum to see Take That there. :|

Only 24 for me. Plus Aldershot and Wealdstone with Reading. And Hereford.

Yeah, I count old grounds too. Currently on 71, 3 missing from PL / Championship, 5 from L1 and 13 from L2. Hoping for a bit more luck in the cup draws next season. Walsall was the only new one bagged last season.

My visit to the City Ground for England's game vs Senegal will make it 77. Looking to add Bradford City and Doncaster to the list next season.

I've been to 39 of the current 92 plus 9 grounds of current league teams that are no longer in use.

Also been to Barnet's old ground and both Southend and Oldham's ground.

Been to all current league grounds except:

  1. Accrington
  2. Barnet
  3. Barrow
  4. Brentford
  5. Bromley
  6. Chesterfield
  7. Everton
  8. Fleetwood
  9. Harrogate
  10. Newport
  11. Salford
  12. Tottenham
  13. West Ham
  14. Wimbledon

But have been to the previous league grounds of Underhill, Griffin Park, Saltergate, Goodison Park, Somerton Park, White Hart Lane & Upton Park of the above. So just the homes of 7 league clubs I’ve never been to.

Wimbledon next 8)

Everton re-added this season and, after that, Luton is the next new league ground we all have added (2027) I think.

There are some really good tools for keeping track of such things - personally I use footballgroundmap.com

74 out of the (new) 92 for me

90th?

The Abbey is rated higher? St James Park (Exeter)?

I find that astounding.

I'll go out for bat - the guy explains exactly why, and its why there's also the run of:

78) Pride Park Stadium (Derby)
79) St Mary’s Stadium (Southampton)
80) King Power Stadium (Leicester)

quite low down.

It's subjective sure, but it's not inexplicable.

My personal experience of two of those (not done Southampton) is that they're perfectly serviceable bowl stadia and, on the right night, good fun to be in. I'll give Derby some props for basically selling out Pride Park on a Tuesday night. The three games I've watched at Leicester are us going up and two European games, one a quarter final.

EDIT - yeah, find the various articles, guy clearly sympathetic to Reading the last season or so and there's a nice vibe about the whole experience.

I get it's about 'half-empty modern souless bowls' and maybe rubbish football.

But its just madness to put these sort of perfectly decent stadia at the bottom whilst choosing decrepit terraces, uncomfortable outdated stands and terrible sight lines at obsolescent stadia ahead of them.

The worst bit about the Abbey ground was that field you had to walk through to get to the away end.

old stadiums that are crumbling apart but you can feel the history and they generate brilliant atmospheres >>>>>>>>>>nice shiny new stadiums which have all the facilities but are out of town and completely soulless

said it before, but the SCL stadium is everything I dislike in a modern stadium. It really saddens me that my own clubs stadium is one of my most disliked in the country.

They have a character, nostalgia, and appeal all of their own which you won't get from most modern stadia.

I like Daniel Storey, read his work for quite a while back to his days at Football365 and have read some of his articles during his 92 odyssey.

When this thread rolled round a few years ago, this was my answer then (July 2023):

https://hobnob.royals.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=5403245#p5403245

+1 to the Futbology love

Of the current 92 I'm missing
Prem - 3 - Brentford, Spurs and West Ham new grounds (had been to all three old grounds)
Champ - 0
League 1 - 6 - Carlisle, Cheltenham, Fleetwood, Orient, Lincoln, Shrewsbury (although I have watched an Army v Navy football match there)
League 2 - 11 - AFC Wimbledon, Accrington, Barrow, Forest Green (went to the old Lawn), Harrogate, Mansfield, Morecambe, Newport, Salford, Stockport, Sutton

So that leaves 20 left to do of the 92, or 19 depending on the view on Shrewsbury.

Total Grounds visited = 118 comprising
England 102
Germany 1
Italy 2
Portugal 2
Rep of Ireland 1
Spain 3
Sweden 1
Wales 6

I've not been to many games since for a variety of reasons, but did add Cheltenham to the list last season in the cup, and Fleetwood in the league the season before.

So my current list (as of the end of the 24/25 season) is
Prem 17/20
Champ 24/24
League 1 19/24
League 2 14/24
Total 74/92

I'll actually go up one next season, as I've been to Oldham's Boundary Park previously, but not Carlisle and Morecambe who've dropped out.

If by 'character' you mean are uncomfortable, dirty and have shit facilities, sure. But why you'd rate that as a positive I don’t know.

Or why being in a city centre industrial estate or boxed in by terraced housing is good.

The Abbey is an absolute heap of shite.
