WestYorksRoyal The game Southgate will always regret is Italy. When we lost to Croatia, we were an inexperienced team who weren't ready. Against France in 2022, we matched a top side and lost out on fine margins that can go against you at that level. Last year, Spain were a class team who could well go on a streak like the class on Iniesta, Xavi et. al.

Italy was the one. Average opponent, home game, and we choked after a strong first half showing.

I'd agree, that's the game that stings the most for me as well.
Would probably say France second, as if Kane scores his penalty, I think we go on to win that game.

Our ranking is possibly somewhat inflated; beating relatively good teams (i.e. top 15) in tournaments adds points.

Not really, the effect of a match depends quite heavily on two things.

*(perceived) importance of game
*gap between teams

using the example of England being 4th and playing a team in 5th or 15th, the difference given in the algorithm between the two is tiny (the key parameter is 0.50 for 5th and 0.51 for 15th).

Waiting on grid-search at mo, so will do the numbers for fun 8)

Yeah, basically fcuk all difference in terms of 'percentage of your current rating' (1.379% v 0.788%)

Rn = Ro + K × (W - We)

Rn is the new rating,
Ro is the old (pre-match) rating.
K is the weight constant for the tournament played:

K = 60 for World Cup finals;

W is the result of the game (1 for a win, 0.5 for a draw, and 0 for a loss).
dr equals the difference in ratings plus 100 points for a team playing at home.
We = 1 / (10^(-dr/400) + 1)

Current 4th beating current 5th

Portugal 2030
Brazil 2002

2058 = 2030 + 60 x (1 - 1/(10^(-0.07) + 1))

28 Points

28/2030 *100 = 1.379%

Current 4th beating current 15th

Portugal 2030
Denmark 1865

2046 = 2030 + 60 x (1 - 1/(10^(-0.4125) + 1))

16 points

16/2030 *100 = 0.788%

.45
.27

And if you were actually at the game it hurts even more...

stealthpapes given the thread, any thoughts on the U-21s today?

Squad is:

JAMES BEADLE - TEDDY SHARMAN-LOWE - TOMMY SIMRIN
CHARLIE CRESSWELL - RONNIE EDWARDS - CJ EGAN RILEY
TINO LIVRAMENTO - BROOKE NORTON-CUFFY - JARELL QUANSAH
ELLIOT ANDERSON - ARCHIE GRAY - HAYDEN HACKNEY
JACK HINSHELWOOD - JAMES MCATEE - TYLER MORTON - ALEX SCOTT (isn’t she a girl?)
HARVEY ELLIOTT - OMAR HUTCHINSON - SAM ILING JNR
ETHAN MWANER - JONATHAN ROWE - JAY STANSFIELD

Jobe Bellingham and Liam Delap were both named as well but have pulled out after recent transfers (both will now be playing in the Club World Cup cobblers rather than for England U21s :evil: )

Czech tonight (8pm), then Slovenia on Sunday (5pm) and the big one v Germany on the 18th (8pm). Have a lot to live up to as defending champions and I’ve no clue as to strength of the other sides.

Be the greatest achievement to successfully defend the competition. Believe Channel 4 have the games if you want to watch.

Who is Charlie Cresswell? He was in the 2023 squad as well. Might look him up

Presumably the son of former Preston, Sheff U & Leeds player Richard?

Thought Alex Scott had a really shit beard until they had a closer up camera angle and saw its a weird mask.

The little I've seen, I'd go with "solid but not spectacular". Son of Richard Cresswell, as pointed out above.

Scored in last night's game.
