MATCHWATCH : AFC Wimbledon (h)

by Sutekh » 13 Aug 2025 10:33

When : Saturday August 16, 3pm
Where : SCL Stadium, Reading, RG2 0FL
Capacity : 24,161

After 20 years away or so, acquaintance is about to be renewed with everyone’s favourite phoenix club. After being done over by their owner and then the FL, Wimbledon, and its supporters, had to start again and crawl back up out of the non league world just so they could have an excuse to revisit the SCL. Thankfully this game can go ahead after Dai’s attempt to launch a similar phoenix club in Reading was unsuccessful.

Reading need to start making some ground up in the league one table being currently 24th out of 24, due to the club’s impressive goal difference which is already the equal worst in the division. Three points though would see the team rise to lurking just outside the top 10 which I think would be essential before having to turn up at Bolton and Wycombe in the immediate weeks. It won’t be easy though as Reading are still looking to score an actual goal in the league this season.

Wimbledon have managed to collect three points already this season after beating Reading's first conquerors of this season Lincoln City 2-0. The Wombles' first game however was an unlucky 1-0 loss at the Kenilworth chicken coop. Consequently they are now sat in 10th place so Reading need a 3 goal win to climb above them in the table.

Eight players (7 permanent and 1 loan) joined last season's League 2 play off winners over the summer while five players departed. Danilo Orsi is possibly the highest profile of these additions, having joined from Burton last month. However the biggest threat is likely to be be posed by former Reading youth player Matty Stevens (he spent 9 years at the club between 2005 and 2014) who is the current leading scorer on the Wimbledon books.

Noel has a selection headache after the midweek league cup success against the sailor boys and while some would say don't change a winning team I would strongly imagine that the likes of Savage, Wing and Lane would return the the starting XI if fit. And injuries of course are the usual story, new signing Des is already out for the rest of the month, Yiadom has his dodgy knee again while Wing is actually thought to have had something in his eye. Lane didn't feature at Portsmouth at all which could just be an agreement when his signing was made (but you never know given Reading's luck). Dorsett should be through the concussion protocols though.

Historically

Reading have never played Wimbledon under their current guise, however the club does have history against them from when they were the original article producing a fairly even record of 4 wins, 4 defeats and 4 draws across all competitions and venues.

The last time the two clubs played each other was Boxing Day 2003 when Reading presented a gutless display and Wimbledon won 3-0 at the Mad Stad. In fact Reading have never even scored a goal against Wimbledon at the Mad Stad as they also lost the only other encounter played there by 1-0 in September 2002.

In total Reading have won 3 of the 6 games played at home but are currently on a run of 2 home defeats in a row.

How to follow the game

  1. Get a ticket and go
  2. Listen to Radio 5 Live and/or a myriad of other radio stations for score flashes
  3. Ring/text a mate for updates
  4. Use a RoyalsTV subscription
  5. BBC Radio Berkshire (FM : 104.4, 104.1 or 95.4 depending where you are in the area)

Whenever we're discussing all-time shit performances, across all seasons in all divisions, this one is frequently mentioned and is certainly in my top / bottom 10.

Iirc Nicky Shorey looked like he'd been replaced with a 12 year old likeness of himself. Got absolutely bullied.

One of the very few games I've given up and left early.

Leigertwood and Jobi both played for Wimbledon that day as well, the latter getting the 3rd goal.

Dean Lewington scored that say as well IIRC. His only goal for Wimbledon. He retired at the end of last season.

Yes, it was part of the infamous three 0-3s in a row with Coppell saying he didn't know what was wrong and people calling for his head.

We missed the POs, then pissed the league the season after iirc.

Stoke (a), Palace (h) then Wimbledon (h), it developed into a 7 game run (incl. 2 FA Cup games) that Reading failed to win any of. Sir Steve had only been in the job for a couple of months so never was likely to get the push. Run ended with a rare win at Forest but it was patchy form that season and also featured that famous 5-1 defeat at Rotherham that Ady always remembers as 6-0! Reading eventually finished 9th though, just 3 points off the POs. The next season was the one that saw the club finish 7th.

According to the Chronic…

Coppell will be back to answer fans' questions on the Purple Turtle Stage, outside the Sir John Madejski Stand, from 1pm as Reading welcome AFC Wimbledon to the SCL Stadium.

We need start playing Ahmed from the start not leave him out the squad entirely ! He is gonna be our next ‘Olise’ and I wanna see as much of him as possible cos I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if Chelsea or City come and try and nick him for a Million at the end of the season!

For me it would be
Pereira
Ahmed. Stickland. Burns. Jacob
Wing. Savage
Doyle
Lane. Kelvin. Kyerewaa

Reading better make sure Ahmed has a decent contract then and isn’t just lost for nothing but a development fee next summer.

Think he got a 2 year contract this summer. Hope we don’t lose him early I wanna see him at Reading for a good few years, the kid gonna be a star.

Just an awful, abject performance, made worse by the sole Dons fan sat in the hospitality seats next to my (then) ST in the top row of the Upper West clapping like a manic sealion on crack cocaine whenever his team ventured beyond the halfway line....... :x :x :x

0-2 at home to Fulham in 2008 still wins for me, due to both the level abjectness but ultimately importance.

The game against Wimbledon mentioned was poor but not really consequential, see also a 3-0 Wigan loss at home around 2019 or so. But the Fulham one will always haunt me.

Was that bad that day that Jobi’s goal was cheered by the Reading fans, almost unironically. As I recall it, it was I think what would be described as a pearler. I did say “I would have him here”.

Signed a two-year deal in July. Just him and Josh Welland got two years.
His interview post-match was excellent. Hadn't realised he's a Reading School boy.

Jacob Borgnis, Carter Bowdery, Philip Duah, Sam Harrison, Abraham Kanu, Shay Spencer and Basil Tuma all signed one-year deals.

Spencer should be in line for a longer one if he matches his Portsmouth performance.

Yes was definitely a good shout to give Ahmed 2 years. Suggests his first team performances weren’t unexpected either

But no need to rush him - I’d certainly like to see him play 20 odd games this year but also no need to force the issue like we did with Garcia last year - to both his and the teams detriment

Yep plenty of time.

And we don't want to just bin off Abrefa either, there's a good first team player there too.

It's almost like we could plan forward, develop Abrefa into a first team regular this season, while giving Ahmed some breakthrough. And then we have the option of two quality RBs, a good loan for Ahmed or getting good money for one or the other and still having a quality RB.
