ffs

Another one of these "sort out my mate" contracts.

This lad is from Waterford, the exact same part of Ireland Hunt is from. Looks like we are taking another punt on someone who has a connection to the manager.

I've seen him play quite a few times for and against the Five Stripes in MLS.

A very experienced and, IMO decent player. Pretty well thought of by Atlanta Utd fans.

IMO this signing is more to do with the fact he fits the 'no dickheads' requirement than him qualifying to play for Ireland. He was born in Germany and only spent a period of time in Waterford as a child. He's about as Irish as Ady WIlliams is Welsh!

Assuming this is true - he's started 15 games in the MLS this season, which is a decent level, so not a massive punt really. Played 115 times in the MLS in total and 250 apps in Champ/L1 so would be, again if true, a decent experienced option.

From Despair To Where? Matt Miazga?

Very little semblance. And Matt Miazga certainly wouldn't fit the 'no dickheads requirement'!

Yea, but does he have pace?....

I've heard Hunt say he wants 'experience' over and over so fully expecting incomings to be 30+...
Which is fine if they have pace...

Fake news.

You say "only spent a period of time in Waterford". He grew up there ffs (from age 7). Have you heard him speak?

Brogue It’s Derrick Williams…

Wasn’t he a youth goalkeeper with Reading back in 1986? Very highly rated at the time and had England youth caps, think he went off to Watford or somewhere after a couple of years.

He moved to Waterford at age 7 and to Villa at 15/16? His early years were nomadic due to his father being in the US forces.

Yes, he's got an Irish accent (you tend to get the accent from the country where spend time growing up as a child). He has spent far more of his life outside of Ireland than in that country.

On Monday Rob Couhig said that he would rate the level of football in MLS at high League 1 /lower half of Championship. I was surprised, that as an American, he rated it quite that low. However, subsequently speaking to someone who knows both MLS and the English leagues really well, they concurred with RC's view.

That being the case, it would seem that Derek Williams is probably the level of player we should be looking at, particularly given our circumstances.
