WestYorksRoyal Liverpool not playing great and looking pretty unconvincing, but already 5 points clear. Will their performance levels improve? Or will results start to slip?

Been thinking about this. I think 'Liverpool have been poor' is getting over-cooked a bit. Sure, they aren't playing scintillating football for 90 minutes, or even 70. But then that isn't Slot's style anyway, which is much more patient than Klopp's. Their defence has had its 'moments' this season, and that's really been the cause of matches being close. With the exception of the trip to Burnley, they haven't really struggled to break teams down or create chances. 16 goals scored in 7 games. I think reality is that 'not quite their best' is comfortably good enough at the moment.

That all begin said, trips to Palace and Chelsea next two weekends probably their toughest games so far this season. Their rivals better hope they drop points.

May as well drink champagne in between the wars

Just watched the highlights (which can be misleading) and it looked like they battered LFC in the first half. TBF LFC had several good chances themselves. I've seen people make comparisons between Palace and Utd due to using the same formation. There's no way Utd fans would put up with 30% possession regardless of the wins (they say they would but would soon start moaning).

Palace looking pretty decent tbf

Although disappointed that Liverpool lost to their current nemesis Crystal Palace it is definitely good for the game and for football fans in general if one team doesn't just run away with it as happened last season.

Palace have a very settled team and a distinctive way of playing and I suspect that only injuries and lack of squad depth will stop them from finishing higher than they have done for some time.

Good win for Arsenal today results in more pool fans getting their knickers in a twist than Newcastle`s, strange lot they are. debatable VAR calls against both teams but you wouldn`t thought it.

For some reason my social media feeds aren't absolutely rammed with Arsenal fans complaining about refs adding too much time on

Tell us you didn`t watch it then, Tino Livramento was down from the 73rd to the 77th minute, that`s 4 minutes added time immediately, and Gabriel scored in the 6th minute of 8.

that overturned Pen when Sheshko was taken down by the keeper was full nonsense. It was a pen.

Could have gone either way, the keeper got a toe nail on it, probably evened out by the Gabriel handball late on.

was listening to some pod at 5am as I couldn't sleep and all the journo's on there (FWIW) said the ball touching the keepers toe was irrelevant to the decision, based on the laws of the game

I shall be looking out for clarity from Dale Johnson of ESPN as he is the man when it comes to VAR and the laws of the game

You're right, i only watched the last 10 minutes or so, not sure what that has to do with it though?

Because you`re commenting on the added time without knowing about the long stoppage for the injury.

It wasn’t the foot that caught the striker, it was the thigh and he ran into that. There was contact then, but Sesko did a ridiculous dive as a result.

On balance ( and in accordance with the rules on the defender touching the ball first, according to MOTD) no pen was correct

I know it was the knee that caught him. but watching live on Sky they were claiming the tiniest touch of the ball on Pope's toe was what meant it wasn't a pen, as if its just default that defender getting a touch = no foul

(it was also a comical dive)

Why would they be getting their knickers in a twist?

Newcastle are showing that they are a way behind the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal and probably City and Palace and although they have lost a player they have once again splashed the cash.
Anybody who watched their dire 0-0 at Bournemouth recently will wonder if the supposedly wonderful manager Eddie should really be the favourite to be the next England manager when at times he looks to play even more conservatively than Southgate.

One other comment on the weekend's football it is a mystery why Amorim stays in his job longer than Potter.

https://www.espn.co.uk/football/story/_/id/46375012/the-var-review-arsenal-newcastle-penalty-man-united-red-card

basically says it wasn't the touch on the ball by the keeper alone that was the deciding factor on overturning the penalty decision in the Arsenal game, but:

When the VAR has identified a play (defined in the laws as any touch of the ball) by Pope before he makes any contact with Gyökeres, it then becomes a question of how the goalkeeper made the challenge.

If Pope was deemed to have made an attempt to win the ball in a fair way, then the touch on the ball means there shouldn't be a spot kick.

If Pope's challenge is judged to be too strong, or reckless, then the touch on the ball wouldn't negate the award of the penalty.

On Sunday, if Pope had come out and got a glove to the ball, rather than a boot, before going into Gyökeres there wouldn't even be a debate about the overturn. As the challenge is just a normal play for the ball, in essence it's no different to using the glove, this should be seen as a correct overturn, and would be expected to be in any league with VAR.

The pedant in me has to point out to the pair of you that it was Gyokeres not Sesko.
