Top winger individual performances

by WestYorksRoyal » 29 Nov 2025 14:48

I'm not going to get carried away and say Kyerewaa is going to be POTS, sold for £5m etc., but today was the best individual performance a Reading winger has made since Azeez left.

Got me thinking, which wide performances do you remember? Kebe had a few spectacular ones; Leicester is probably an all timer for me. The amazing thing about Little was his consistency, but I don't remember any individual performances standing out above the rest.

Mark McKeever away to Stoke.

Glen Little never looked like a winger. Tall, not particularly quick and gangly looking so he never looked spectacular. He did his best work with little feints and body swerves in tight spaces.

+1 Gilkes in several games incl. the Simod final.

McKeever v Stoke

Little v Plymouth

Convoy v Millwall

Kebe v West Ham

Damn sure Meaker had a couple of terrific points winning performances too.

Very definitely. That was the number of Reading fans IIRC.

He absolutely ripped Luton a new one after we had conceded the first goal and many, including myself, were fearing the worst and a long, miserable afternoon.

Bobby Convey must have had a few too? Certainly scored that brilliant individual goal v Millwall in 05/06 where he picked up possession not far from our own area and went on a solo run through the middle, beating 2 or 3 opponents and then their keeper to score.

One for the oldies - shame we didn't get longer to enjoy him before his then big money (£60K then - £881K now) move to Southampton.

Tommy Jenkins five goals in just 21 games.

Bought from Margate for £500 just 6 months earlier, although we did then have to pay them an appearance bonus of £1,000 after 10 games.

Where does that rank amongst our highest returns on investments in players?

Mass Sarr first game at the Madejski. One of the great false dawns.

Wingers at Wembley that day was your man Jones and Neil Smilie - Gilkes played up front with Tait that game. But admittedly Gilkes changed many a game as a winger

See also Drenthe’s first game.

I remember Rougier ripping some teams to pieces at the start of the 2001/2 season when we were regularly beating teams 5-0 at the Madejski under Pardew.

Gilkes vs Man City at Elm Park
Georgi kinkladze just looked bemused as to what was happening as Gilkes just ran the game

We did better out of Long, and Olise and Gylfi cost us nothing and earned us millions, Jamie Gittens never even played for us but earned a lot of money.

A man who played for Reading in a game Reading featured in but was playing for the other team, Sonny Aluko at Craven Cottage.

Demolished us that day and added insult to injury by costing us a packet thereafter.

Yes, thanks for the reminder that was brilliant as it really wasn’t expected, shame the rest of the side largely wasn’t really up to it on the day but then it was Arsenal and Reading will never get anything off them.

Not a traditional winger, but Ejaria had some great games on the left; he destroyed Fulham twice. Such a shame we saw it so infrequently.

I suppose...

I would class Gilkes as a winger and the thread asked for 'Top Winger individual performance'...

Albeit technically he was playing as part of a front two in that particular game...

Also as a Reading Legend he gets special dispensation...
