Unfortunately, neither of those are records that we hold (and it's my fault that people think we have the promotion one). Reading got promotion at Leicester on 25 March. In advance of that game, I had read in an old Rothmans that Notts County had the earliest ever promotion on 28 March 1998. I told the club and the Post, both of whom used the information.

Later I learned that Middlesbrough got promotion on 23 March 1974. But it was by a win over Oxford, so that's OK. They also won the title on 30 March 1974. Whether either of those are actually the earliest I don't know, but it does beat Reading.

Won't happen but it states a sanction is deduction of points to deny them promotion. Any idea if that would be enough points to ensure they don't go up automatically or to ensure they miss out on the playoffs?

They can actually choose to bump them out of the promotion/playoff places altogether, it is not limited to a fixed point deduction.

So, their point tally would stand, but they wouldn't be allowed to be promoted.

D-day for all this stuff is April - projections for the current year have to be submitted by the end of March, and penalties for breaches over the three year period then applied by the end of the season.

Obvs won't happen, but given the size of losses we're talking about, preventing promotion this season would almost have to guarantee no promotion the next two seasons as well without a dramatic firesale and slashing of the wage bill.
