Most people are either happy for us to finish 17th or beat one of the big boys at home.

I think you are overestimating the Premiership. While the top 4 teams are head and shoulders above the rest, the majority of the other teams are filled with second rate, overpaid players.

Teams like Fulham, Charlton, Wigan, Villa and Middlesbrough, will struggle this year, so there is no reason why we should not finish around 10th - 14th.

Remember we stormed the championship last season and have a young side that is capable of improving and keeping the momentum going. In addition, the signings and potential signings are looking good and are at the exactly right level to improve our squad without disrupting the existing team blend.

The key is starting well in our first 5 games....

YES! totally agree. i want to see reading win even if we play bollocks. dont want to go down saying the boys 'tried their hardest', i want to stay up and turn a few teams over that arent expecting it. i am so excited.

For me, playing chelsea at home 0-0 85 mins when sir steve sends on someone called Long, who goes about nutmegging Lamps dumping him on the floor, rides the rough studs up challenge from Terry, before out-sprinting the rest of the back line to calmy chip the out rushing Cech, securing a 1-0 win.

I actually see very little negativity on here. More realism.

This is our first ever season at this level. Every single person on here would be delighted to finish in the top half.

I will be extremely happy though to finish 17th. As that means, the mission has been accomplished. Anything over and above that will be a glorious bonus.

As an American I've learned that getting relegated, while devestating, isn't the same as being sent to the minors. So even though I desperately want us to stay up, I won't start kicking the dog if we go down.
What I'm most looking forward to is the opportunity to see the games on tv here in the states, to see the stadium and the players, and to recall the two times I got to be in the stands with my son last year. That'll be nice.

Basically everything that has been mentioned. I just had a flash back of a dream I had where we had exceeded Sunderlands total points margin long before Christmas. Hopefully a good preminition!

Survival is probably the most important thing. Why stop before European football though? Perhaps by playing Chelsea in the FA Cup final!

Along the way I would most like to do the double over the Blades (during which Colin will be fined for misconduct, possibly twice), doing the double over Spurs (to tribute a work colleague), the double of West Ham (to tribute Escarriot), some points of Man Utd (to tribute a long term hate) and Chelsea (to tribute the fact that we'll be away on Boxing Day on telly).

You must be one happy man. Pity about the cup, though.

Thanks for resurrecting this one, M27Royal, now that we approach the anniversary of the promotion game. It really brings it home how pathetically little we expected at the beginning, and how fantastically far we have come. And let's not forget that fact, before we get on the manager's back for fielding an "understrength" cup side, or whatever else we're grumbling about at any particular moment.
